Get The Murrays to England

We lost my father unexpecedtly on Friday 10th February. We're a transatlantic family - I live with my wife and family in the US, my late Dad, Mum and the rest of my relatives are in the North of England. We need funds to get at least me out of my US family to England for the funeral next Friday, February 24th.

It's been a long and difficult few weeks for us. Here's the story.

My dad was visiting us in the US this Christmas - as he an my Mum had done every year for at least a decade - when he accidentally took some of my Mum's bladder control pills. So he started retaining water to a painful level. This led to a visit to the Emergency Room, and I still remember the sweet smile on his face as we walked back to be seen, as he knew he would soon be relieved of his pain.

What happened instead was, as well as the quick relief from bladder pressure, the discovery of a host of problems with his heart. He was admitted to the local hospital. There he was quickly fitted with a pacemaker to cure his bradycardia. We joked that the pacemaker's lifespan would see him through to 99.

Yet there were other problems. He was transferred to another hospital where he was considered for a TAVR procedure for aortic senosis and they discovered he needed a triple bypass. For various reasons, it was decided to send him back to the UK rather than have the operation here. he was overjoyed to be released from hospital after two weeks, and we loved having him with us for an extra week while he regained his strength before heading home in late January. In the meantime we had the shocking news that my uncle Denis had died suddenly.

When Dad got back to England, it seemed to take ages for him to be seen by a cardiologist over there. He was finally seen last Wednesday and was told he didn't need to have the operation. He was so happy to hear that.

Then on Friday came the terrible phone call. He was gone.

We had been making plans for the family (me, my wife Kris, our daughter Helen [16], and our son George [13]) to go up to see him and Mum after Helen completed her exchange student visit to an English school in June. Instead, we need to get some or all of us (at least me, Iain) to England next Friday, February 24 for the funeral. My Mum has asked me to deliver the eulogy, so I will get there by hook or by crook.

We can just about cover the cost of one ticket, but it will wipe us out for the rest of the pay period, and living expenses will be an issue.

So if you can help us out quickly, we'd be very grateful. My wife Kris will be in charge of the expenses, and there's no-one better at getting value for money. We'll be looking to draw down the funds as soon as we can.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks for considering donating. Any little will help.

Finally, when my Dad was in the RAF, he used to be put on sentry duty at night from time to time. It was a cold and lonely job. The one bright spot was when the Salvation Army band would come round and play for the poor sentries. Although my father was a lifelong agnostic, he retained affection for the "Sally Bash" ever afterwards, and would give to them whenever he sw them ringing the bells outside American grocery stores. We will rpbably donate any excess money that is not used for travel or basic living expenses to the Salvation Army in his memory.

PS The photo of Dad is from a few years back. Like me, he wasn't a natural smiler, so my wife asked him to, in his words, "grin like an idiot." That's his fun-loving, Goons fan personality right there.

In case any of you missed Kristen's comments, she's asked me to repost them as an update:

1. Thank you so much. Your response has been overwhelming. Iain and I are in tears with gratitude. We can only promise to pay it forward or, if possible, pay it back in kind whenever possible. Thank you so much.

2.

To say thank you to all of you who have been so generous, I have uploaded some of my favorite images to my Gardenography By Kris facebook page. For the next few days, these images will be available as a thank you for all who have donated. You do not need to go through my ViewBug site. Feel free to select an image or two that you like for your own (personal) use. And thank you again for helping us say goodbye to daddy. https://www.facebook.com/Gardenography-By-Kris-488817737846069/

3. [Posted earlier today] As I said below, to say thank you for your kind donations, please visit my Gardenography By Kris page on facebook (here - https://www.facebook.com/Gardenography-By-Kris-488817737846069/) and choose one of the uploaded pictures I posted for your personal use. These unwatermarked, unrestricted images will be available you to download until March 1st. I am even putting some new ones up today. You can download it easily by clicking on the image, then right clicking, and selecting "save image as". You can use it right away as a screen saver or print directly from your computer. For professional quality prints, mouse pads, coffee mugs, and the like, I highly recommend Vistaprints ( http://www.vistaprint.com). And for something larger and more interesting, I use aluminize.com for images ranging from 5" x 5" to 30" x 60" but these images are specially coated so they can be hung outside (but don't hang them in direct sunlight). Or you can just put them on a thumb drive and print them out at Walmart. It's all good. Just please, PERSONAL USE ONLY. Again, thank you so much for your support. It means the world to us. We have already made the donation we promised to the Salvation Army in Dad's name. Iain and George are on their way to the UK for Dad's Funeral this afternoon. And we have locked up the remainder of your kindness in a special savings account so we will be able to return to the UK in June to help Mum spread Dad's ashes. Thank you all over and over again for your help in our time of need.

Thanks to your generosity, after talking with my Mum we have agreed that George and I will be going across for the funeral next week. The whole family will go over in the Summer (probably June) to spend proper family time with her and our other relatives, and possibly to scatter Dad's ashes somewhere dear to him. This probably would not have been possible without you all.

I shall take pictures of the trip and post them here.

And also as promised, we shall be making a generous donation to the Salvation Army.

Thanks again to everyone - if you haven't received a personal thank you yet, you will soon.

Again, thanks for all your generosity. It means so much to us.

At this stage I don't think we need anything more. You've all been very kind, some of you remarkably so.

I'll keep the campaign open so that I can post further updates, but please don't feel like you have to contribute anything.

Your support has been amazing. It looks like we'll be able to get as many of us across as Mum can cope with, and those who can't will be able to go across later without any worry. I'll have another update tomorrow.

My deepest condolences to the entire family for your loss also. I believe what the bible says that our loved ones are in God's memory for the resurrection hope Acts 24:15. When they awaken it will be in a new system of things ,not in this painful one and death will be no more. Revelation 21:3,4. Prayers for your family.
