Bard on a Bike Interrupted -- I arrived in Barcelona the 7th April, excited to be back in Catalonia and France sharing my music and exploring the landscape sites for my book. I had an extra day to rest from the long flight and rented a bicycle. It was a beautiful day for riding on the coastal path along the Med, and -- KABOOM -- I fell and suffered a severe triple fractured femur bone.
I had to wait four days in traction before there was a surgeon available. The surgery went well and spent eight days in the hospital. Luckily I could speak Spanish! I'm finally back in my flat in France and looking at up to six months of recuperation before I can walk.
Unfortunately my European insurance plan has a deductible of $2,500. The insurance doesn't cover home help and am paying everything out of pocket to survive in the interim. Needless to say, my life and work are interrupted.
As a normally healthy, independent woman, accustomed to helping others and my family, it's a new thing for me to be in a wheelchair and ask for assistance! And yet it is a very heart opening experience to find how many people are there when you need them!
