GCC Maker Space

Tax deductible
We are extremely excited to announce our partnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to take part in Making Spaces: Expanding Maker Education Across the Nation, a project supported by Google that helps schools nationwide integrate maker education into their curricula. A group including administrators and teachers have begun working with representatives from the Children’s Museum to develop a vision for GCC’s Makerspace that will drive its creation and implementation.

Centered on the Catholic faith, we believe that all students have unique learning abilities, have a moral responsibility for service, and benefit for social collaboration. Making in our school enhances the rigorous curriculum and shapes our students’ minds and hearts. We aim to incorporate a multidisciplinary learning approach that allows all students to experience productive failures and successes. We know that students who are actively engaged in their own learning benefit from hands-on projects, problem solving, and creative thinking, move into higher education ready to make applications and solve real world problems.

In this first phase at GCC, we are planning on focusing on 7th, 8th, and 9th grades and will be designing a class specifically focused on introducing students to the making concept and exposing students to the technology and tools that will be available in the upper grades.   We will be redesigning our computer lab and have identified the appropriate tools and materials necessary to provide students with a wide variety of experiences in project and problem based learning.  We will also be tying in many of the components that we currently have available including 1:1 Computing, 3D printers, Lego robotics kits, and our television studio.

In addition to the cooperation in planning and material selection, the most exciting and important aspect of our partnership with the Children’s Museum and Katie is the professional development that will be provided to our faculty in order to fully implement making throughout the curriculum.
