This page has been created to help everyone's favorite red-headed, pony-tailed, sports and Fernet loving bartender. The outpouring of support has been wonderful and many people have reached out asking how they can help, so we figured the best thing to do was to create a central place for information and to raise money on his behalf. We will keep this page updated with his progress.
This page is being launched in conjunction with a planned fundraising party for Gary that is scheduled for Monday, February 27, at the Horseshoe Tavern (2024 Chestnut Street) beginning at 5:00. Gary is planning to attend and we hope you can come by and celebrate his ongoing recovery. People are encouraged to donate on this site and come see Gary at the party.
As many of you have heard, Gary tripped and took a fall down the stairs of his apartment building on January 9th. In doing so, he damaged his spinal cord, fractured a vertebrae and separated his aortic lining. He has had two surgeries, one to repair his spine and one to repair his aorta. He spent two weeks in the ICU at SF General and then went to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for rehabilitation. While he loved the attention from the nurses (and is of course everyone’s favorite patient) he is excited to have moved to his daughter’s home in the East Bay as of February 9th to continue working on his recovery.
As a result of his injuries, Gary’s movement and mobility are severely impaired and he will need a significant amount of rehabilitation and physical therapy to regain the ability to do simple things like walk, use his left arm, cook, etc. It is going to be a long journey, but all of his doctors say that with the right therapy his potential for complete recovery is high. While we don't yet know what that road will look like, it will include ongoing intensive outpatient therapy, nursing care and a period of recovery where he won't be able to work.
Money raised on this page will go directly to medical bills and supporting him during this time of recovery. We all know you want Gary back behind the bar and in the neighborhood as soon as possible, and the better care we can get for him, the sooner he will be there.
