Haylene's Green Sustainable Garden: Stepping Up to the Plate

West End and surrounding communities, wouldn't it be amazing to have a Commercial Kitchen with a food service right here in our backyard? What if we told you that it was possible with just a little help from everyone?

"Haylene Green the Garden Queen" is certified by the United States Department of Agriculture and licensed to prepare and serve any kind of food item. Since Haylene was a child, she was known for her ability to grow and prepare natural and nutritious foods by canning, jarring, and pickling them. To this day, Haylene grows her own fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, herbs, etc. right here in the West End soil; it doesn’t get any fresher than that. Haylene’s mission is to shower our youth with encouragement by showing them about entrepreneurship and self- sustainability, while uplifting and rebuilding the West End and surrounding communities through her love of food.

Adding a Commercial Kitchen to the West End would be a huge advancement. There would be a place close by to have: a hearty meal, a neighborhood kitchen to accommodate mass cooking needs, a place to hold youth classes and community service events, and it would most importantly generate money FOR the community right IN the community.

Your contributions, no matter how large or small, will go to the purchase, remodeling, and installation of state of the art commercial kitchen appliances, new decor, and any unforeseen fees associated with this project. Help us rebuild the historical West End area! Thank you in advance for all your contributions to this wonderful cause.

For as long as she can remember, Haylene Green has been planting in the soil. A Native of Port Antonio, Jamaica, where tropical fruits and vegetables grow wild and plentiful, Haylene carries a strong familial tie to farming. Her father and grandfather farmed commercially and were known for their fresh crops and welcoming personalities. When Haylene was a child, her family relocated to Brooklyn, NY. This shift from soil to city lights didn't deter Haylene from her love of planting and harvesting, it actually brought her closer. She grew food from potted plants right in her New York City home and continued with her passion. When Haylene reached adulthood, she visited Atlanta for a family reunion and she fell in love - in love with the trees, the land, and the openness. Soon after, in 1974, she relocated to a farm in the historical West End community where she has been planting and maintaining fruit-bearing trees and other harvests of her own.

Haylene is famed in the farmers’ market community and has made connections that span the United States and the Caribbean. Growing fruits and vegetables native to the Caribbean islands in Atlanta’s soil is her staple and her tropical pumpkins and hibiscus sorrel earned her the name “Haylene Green the Garden Queen".

When her sister started a community business in the West End of Atlanta, Haylene began cultivating an acre of the land. With the help of a steady stream of volunteers, Haylene was able to teach the community about farming and growing which gave them access to fresh, and tropical, produce. Haylene is blessed to still be on her journey today.

“Haylene Green the Garden Queen" spends a substantial amount of time and money taking her fresh produce to be cooked off-site. To avoid this inconvenience (and financial burden) and to assist in the rebuilding of the West End and surrounding communities, she would like to build a Commercial Kitchen on her farm. Currently, there is a 28' x 40' building on the property that needs to be restored and renovated to make the new kitchen possible. Your contributions, no matter how large or small, will go to the purchase, remodeling, and installation of state of the art commercial kitchen appliances and new decor. Haylene is no stranger to labor and community bargaining, she can get this done, and needs us to step up to the plate.

With the motto and vision of "alleviating poverty through sustainability", the Garden Queen knows how important it is to reach, teach, and give back to the community; especially the youth. By continuing her work in the garden and building a new kitchen on-site, Haylene and her volunteers will be able to give back to the community that continues to give her so much.

Thank you for your love and support! We will keep you posted on this journey! :)
