Help Me Keep My Farm

Gaia's Breath Farm has suffered a devastating and crippling blow this early morning; Our pole barn, hay barn and tool shed burned down. There was no electricity, flammable materials, hay or anything else in the barn to start the fire. We lost our young heifer calf, Jessabelle, a boar and a few sows. Thankfully, the rest of our animals were already out on pasture. Cause at this time unknown.
The area was in a long term process of being repaired, rebuilt and refurbished. Chrissy, Paul, Anthony and I as well as the rest of my family have been building this farm since 2006 after early years of part time building a house. Our heart, souls and sweat went into this farm. Now, the devastation is overwhelming. There was no insurance on the barn structures due to the condition of the area with detritus scattered across the area. Many tons of garbage, wood waste, etc from the prior owners littered the area and over the years we have cleaned up the place to the point where this season insurance would have been a possibility. Our barn is an essential part of the farm. We will try to make do but, come Fall/Winter a barn is essential. Our structures will cost way over $150,000 to rebuild. A loan is not an option; we have put every cent we have into this farm; around $750,000; there is no deep well to go to and I hurt. Prayers are welcome

Well, it's Winter and our barn fund raiser continues. We have adapted to the situation and cannot wait for Spring and the hope of renewal.

We had a dedicated group of people show up in the rain to help clean up the barn area. Tons of scrap metal was collected and packed into a container for recycling. It was a tough, dirty job under adverse conditions. We cannot thank everyone enough for helping at a time when each person is busy with their own work. The barn area already looks many times better and the effort of the volunteers will save us hundreds of hours of labor. Here is a list of the Cooperstown Farmers Market people who helped us in one way or another; GLIMMERGLASS APLACAS-
LYNN DEICHMAN; GOLD PETALS-MIKE & ELLEN WEIR,; HIGHLAND FARM-INGRID VIGH; LAPPS PRODUCE- AMOS LAPP. DAVID ASH, RUBIN SWANEY, Elder Peterson and Elder Hammond; MIDDLEFIELD ORCHARD-Willy and Joan Bruneau ; MILL HOLLOW MAPLE- BRIAN RYTHER; MOUNTAINVIEW DAIRY-DAN BYLER; PAINTED GOAT FARM-Ilyssa Berg & JAVIER FLORES; SUMMERS END ORCHARD-GREGORY MEYDING & JOANNE SHARKEY; ITALIAN COOKIE HOME-LARRY GIANNONE’S .
Thank you so much for all your help. You have all been more than helpful; you have been gratious, caring and wonderful. Our spirits have been uplifted.

Tomorrow, Monday, the cleanup of the barn area begins. The area may still have some hot pockets so we will be a bit careful. Out with the old is the first step to rebuilding.
