Gabriel's Place is an Urban Agriculture Education Program located in the heart of the community of Avondale in Cincinnati Ohio.

Our Vision: to provide a safe, beautiful and spiritually nourishing place for the Avondale neighborhood to gather in mutual respect to learn and interact and promote peace in the community.

Mission: To create a space for our neighbors in Avondale to reclaim health, self, and sense of community through the language of food.

Core Principles: To be a food resource. Build community through healthy food. Empower urban youth to achieve their highest potential.

Avondale one of 52 neighborhoods in Cincinnati, Ohio and is home to 12,500 predominantly African American residents; 42% of whom live below the economic poverty level. Avondale is a beautiful place that is on the rise. Race riots of 1967 and 1968 left the neighborhood in despair and decades of systematic disinvestment have been met with a rejuvenation of spirit from collaborative partners including public and private funders, residents, faith based institutions, businesses, and anchor institutions.

Food access is an incredible challenge for our community, and our widening “food desert” is contributing to increasing health problems. A food desert is a community without a fresh food retailer or grocery store, coupled with a very high concentration of fast food outlets, corner stores, and minimarts. Poor health outcomes that plague Avondale residents in our food desert community include high rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and preterm births.

Our chief challenge is to increase “buy-in” to a community-wide understanding that cultural freedom can be found through food. Our neighborhood has a problem of access to healthy food, but we do not have a shortage of fertile land where one might grow their own food.

Adults in Avondale are working toward being healthier. Community members have rallied together and supported many health-related programs that address the community's health concerns. Access to healthy food also differs by income and race.

How we serve:
Share a Meal: We invite the community to gather over a donation-based, restaurant-style meal prepared in-house using fresh ingredients and thoughtfully designed by our Chef. Everyone is welcome to the table on Tuesdays to share the joy of a collective meal. Volunteer nurses also perform health screenings during dinner.

Cook It Up: An 8 week, skills-based basic cooking curriculum designed in-house and tested in partnership with CCTST.

The Marketplace: On Tuesdays & Saturdays, we sell fresh produce, grown in our garden or provided in partnership with various local growers. Prices range from $.25 to $2, and we accept SNAP benefits.

Junior Chef/Jr. Agriculture Institute: This signature experience is a free 8-week summer culinary and agriculture education program, open to neighborhood high school students with a passion for caring for the earth, growing food, entrepreneurship thorough Farmers Markets, and an interest in the culinary arts as professions. This program prepares our youth for careers in the culinary industry, environmental sustainability, agriculture, and entrepreneur.

Garden: Our garden produces over 10,000 pounds of food annually to support our programming. We raise chicken for fresh free ranged and eggs and our bees are producing local honey. The pesticide and herbicide free produce grown in our garden is sold at our weekly farmer’s market, as well as supplies our teaching kitchen with fresh ingredients. We encourage our neighbors to connect with us in the fresh air, learn new skills, grow food, and build a beautiful space.

All of our programs are free to the Community of Avondale and surrounding neighborhoods. In order for us to continue this great work, we are creating a social enterprise that will help us become more sustainable and add another job preparedness program and expand our Market Place for our Community to purchase healthy food year round, seven days a week.
