We have all been in a position where we felt motionless. We physically can’t move because we don’t know how. We don’t know which way to move, which way to look, where to go for help, none of it makes sense. In those positions, there are often times where we wish we were able to ask for help. Unfortunately that is one thing we as humans have yet to master. Yet we go day by day, with the hope that some miracle is going to happen that may offset any negative news or tragic time we may be experiencing. That is why I am starting this GoFundMe page. To be the hope for a dear friend and his family that they hold onto each day since they received the news that Eric Walker has Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

My name is Joe Daywood. I am looking to raise money to offset the medical costs for a good friend of mine, Eric Walker.  Eric and I go back a ways and for as long as I can remember, he has been the type of person everyone wishes they could be. He puts his family and friends first, will do anything to help others before he helps himself, and walks around with the biggest smile on his face and a Dale’s Pale Ale in his hand (for safe keeping of course), regardless of whatever life tries to put in his way. He has a beautiful wife Michelle, two amazing children; Rachel who is 15 and Logan who is 12, and a golden retriever named Zoey.

“Walker” as I call him has helped my family and I relocate more times than I can count and even helped us transfer our lives from Pittsburgh to Mountaintop, Pa.  Walker is always on the move, trying to please every person he possibly can, because just by seeing him or her happy, he is happy.  If he’s not waking up early making breakfast for his wife before she goes to work, he’s running Logan to Ice Hockey practice down at the Ice- a- Rama or taking Rachel to a sleepover party at her girlfriend’s house. He has a heart of gold and the soul of a saint.

It’s true what they say though, bad things happen to good people. On Friday, December 18th, I called Eric on a whim to reach out and shoot the breeze for a while. Haven’t had spoken in a few days, I wanted to see what he was up to, how the holiday planning’s were coming along and what not, the usual. This phone call instantly had a different vibe to it. When he answered, I noticed there was something different about the way he sounded. Eric said that he would call me right back as he was waiting to be called in to the Doctors office.  It was about a half an hour later when he called me back.  We started talking and he had told me a few days prior that he felt dizzy, so his wife made him make an appointment, not thinking anything serious was going to come out of it. Maybe one to many Dale Pale Ale’s the day before. During the doctor visit, blood was taken and a routine checkup was completed.  The blood results came back and he was instructed to see another doctor that same day for a bone marrow test.  To all of our dismay the test came back and showed he has Acute Myeloid Leukemia or ALM for short.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells to include red blood cells, platelet-forming cells, and other types of white blood cells.  In AML, the cancerous cells, or blasts, fill up the bone marrow where normal blood cells are formed.

Monday, December 21, Eric was told to check into Jeanes Hospital Temple Bone Marrow Program in Philadelphia, Pa where for the next 10 days he will be undergoing chemotherapy in order to get this disease into remission. After remission success it’s going to be a long battle to good health.  Eric will then have to spend up to four months in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant.

What separates this from all of the other people in the world who need help you may ask? Me. I separate because I know the Walker family would never ask for help. They would never turn this into a negative because right now, Eric needs as much positivity as possible. I’m doing this because Walker has done so much for me, my family and all of his friends throughout the years.  Now he and his family could use the help during this long battle he has ahead of him. We are just at the beginning, but I know with the right treatment, the right support system behind him and the constant reassurance that everything will be okay, we can make this easier and potentially save a life. A lot of people don’t like to help the ones that they don’t know but in the long run of life, think about all of the people you interact with on a daily basis. Think about how many of them need help and they are too afraid to ask. Think about all of the people you WOULDN’T meet in your life, if they didn’t have the people that cared about them to save them. You never know how many people you are able to help until your put to the test to do so. Help me save someone. Help me make someone’s live easier. Help me be able to take some of the pain away that the Walker family has to go through.  Anything you could contribute to help his family I would greatly appreciate, from the bottom of my heart. Karma comes in all shapes and forms, and if you ask me, you never know when your going to get the phone call that could change everything. Wouldn’t you want someone to do for you what you could do for them? Thank you everyone and best wishes.
