Funds for Froman

$45,256 of $54,000 goal

Raised by 745 people in 83 months

If you are here, it is because you know and love Elissa Froman.  You know the impact she has had on the people lucky enough to surround her, you are those people. Or maybe you know of her. You know of her advocacy work, her commitment to community, social justice, civil rights, and making the world a better place.

Elissa has been courageously dealing with the medical implications of the Hodgkin's Lymphoma diagnosis she received in 2006. Most recently, she's been in the hospital since February 2012 related to complications from treatment. For eight months she has shown strength, patience, and valor to a degree that seems impossible. She's done a lot of work, but now it's our turn. Let's cover rent and medical bills for her and the Froman family as best we can.

Elissa has always found power and comfort in Friedrich Nietzsche's words, "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." She is our why.

Please make a donation using the online form below.  All funds will go directly to the Froman family for use at their discretion.  You are encouraged to share this fundraising page far and wide.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Elissa Froman. It's surreal to write, to accept this profound loss. It's overwhelming, the thought of how lucky it was to know her and be her friend, to have her on your side. We have to do and be the things Elissa won't get the chance to do or be now. We have to build community, advocate for those without voices, and spread goodness like she would.

May her memory be a blessing.

One Year in the Hospital

It has been a while since we've written an update, yet we remain amazed and deeply moved that people continue to give and to honor Elissa and share her story. The way this movement to support Froman has spread throughout her extended community; those close to her, those who are acquaintances, those whom she has touched, and those who are special to people that are Elissa's friends, has awed us all as "Friends of Froman". As we recognize that it has been one year since Elissa entered the hospital, it is as important today as it was a year ago to rally together to encourage her recovery and healing.

It will be a long road ahead, but Elissa has always thrived when the community around her has courageously supported her and we are all so grateful that you are there with us every step of the way. In Elissa's own words from a blog post she wrote on her blog, shewhohasawhy:

"¦ "building community is the purpose of my life. Professionally and personally, intellectually and emotionally, it is the locus of my meaning. I'm incredibly lucky that I get to do it "¦.
With all the terrible things that have come from my cancer experience, I can say definitively that I am never more acutely aware of this community-building orientation as when I am in treatment. I am so well supported and loved, that it is literally healing. I feel physically better after spending time with friends and family. I can never express enough gratitude for the affirmative experience of being surrounded by support, and for the constant reminder of the power of community..."

Thank you for being this community to Elissa. Thank you for donating and encouraging the communities around you to do so as well. Most important, thank you for keeping Elissa in your thoughts and prayers. You are what drives her everyday to "keep on keeping on". We are thankful every day for each and every one of you.

It has been only one month since we began Funds for Froman and the progress we've made is overwhelming. We are so close to our final goal of $52,000! This community is simply incredible, we cannot thank you enough.

Like us, I'm sure a lot of you were thinking about Elissa on Election Day. She's one of those people that makes days like that possible. Froman's heart is always in DC, and DC is here in Chicago with her as evidenced by this letter from our Vice President. Not too shabby!

As Elissa enters her tenth month in the hospital and unable to work, the need for this fundraiser becomes more apparent. We ask that you keep sharing this link as much as you can- through email, facebook, gchat, etc. If every donor encouraged one other person to donate, we should be able to quickly reach our final goal.

We could not have done this if we didn't do it together, so again, thank you.
