Joseph Townsend is a local 10 year old 5th grader at Lord Baltimore Elementary. On November 3rd he went in for a routine eye exam where they discovered a swollen optic nerve which was caused by a golf ball sized tumor. He was immediately transfered to Johns Hopkins where within 24 hours of the eye exam he was in surgery. The family has been back and forth to Baltimore taking care of Joseph who is still in Johns Hopkins. As therapy continues for Joseph over the next couple weeks, the entire family hopes to be back together very soon! Joseph's father, Sgt. Ronnie Townsend was born and raised in this community and has been with the Ocean City Police Department for over 25 years. In our generous, close-knit town we live in let's show our support!

From Michelle- Well, we finally all made it home from Baltimore a little shy of a month on December 2. Joseph started back to school 1/2 days and does his occupational therapy in school. He also goes to physical therapy two times a week in Berlin, MD. Right now he is working on his balance when walking which was affected by the brain surgery itself. He also has some blurriness and double vision at times which is also a result of the swollen optic nerve and surgery. With time, Joseph's doctors at Hopkins and his therapists are hopeful that these side effects will lessen, or even go away. We know we have a long, fighting road ahead of us.

Hi! I am so sorry to see this. My son Alex (6) was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2015. We live in Ocean City. It also sat on his optic nerve and he had emergency surgery. He spent a month at Hopkins and a month at Kennedy Krieger. I know how hard and frightening this experience can be and would be happy to help the family in any way I can. My prayers are with this sweet boy who has joined the ranks of many brave and inspirational fighters.

Your story touched our heart. As we are soon to be residents of Ocean View, DE, and my husband has been a police officer for 30+years, we wanted to show our support. Wishing Joseph and his family a very Merry Christmas, and a Blessed and Healthy New Year!
