Funding for Field-trip

Donation protected
My students need funding to go on a field trip to go see The Hate U Give in  the theater opening week.   But first, a little background....

Greetings, I am a special education / literacy specialist at a large rural suburban high school in Skagit County; it is a  high diversity, low income high school . More than 60% of my students are minorities and and more than 70% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Currently. I teach two language arts intervention classes for students that have a reading and/or writing discrepancy of two or more grade levels. My high school students read and write between the 3rd and 8th grade levels. While my students struggle to read and write, they are all authors, poets and lovers of literature. They are vibrant young people with a thirst for knowledge. My students are capable of changing the world.   My goal is to endow each and every one of my students with a love of language and a love of stories. I strive to deepen my students' understanding of the human condition.

This year my students and I are reading / studying the Hate U Give.  And they are loving it!  In the 4 years that I have been teaching language arts I have never seen my students--or any students fort that matter--so motivated, so engaged and so affected by a book before.   I am so  proud of them.  I want to bring this literacy experience to life.  I want celebrate their success and deepen their understanding of the story.

So...I want to take them to the movies.   But I need help.  I have already been able to fund raise partial costs for the trip, but not all of it, not all of the tickets, nor the bus.  Who knew school buses are were so expensive?  Can you help?

In closing, one of my favorite writers, Borges, said, "To think, analyze and invent are not anomalous acts, but the normal respiration of intelligence."  Reading is the skill that enables these acts of critical thinking to occur.  I believe that the best thing I can do for my students is to, not only help them become better readers, but provide them with the knowledge and tools to become lifelong critical thinkers.  From the bottom of my teacher heart, thank you.
