Gordon Feenstra was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the end of August 2017. A healthy and active young man with deeply ingrained kindness, this was unexpected and shocking. Gord shared that the Leukemia spread quickly from his bone marrow into his blood, causing him joint pain. Luckily the doctors found out what was going on and Gord started chemotherapy August 31st . After 3 weeks in Vancouver General Hospital, Gord is happy to report that he has been released from the hospital and is now an outpatient. Unfortunately, as an outpatient Gord needs to stay close to Vancouver General Hospital and will be unable to travel home to the Sunshine Coast for quite some time. The Doctors tell him that the treatment for this takes approximately one year as an outpatient and this is why we are asking for your help.

Here are some words from Gord:

"I am unfortunately unable to work or care for my family during this time. My wife, Allison, as well as many of our amazing friends and family have stepped up to the plate in more ways than I can thank them all for already! But, I don't have an extended medical plan. Allison has been working less in order to take care of Zoe and visit me when she can. The prescription drugs that I need to take as part of my treatment are very expensive and, given the long road ahead, are expected to cost many thousands of dollars. Combined with our lost wages and frequent ferry travel to visit me in Vancouver, even the first month has proven to be very costly."

Many people keep asking how they can help. Here is a way that will ease some of the massive stress that this family is under.

From Gord, “Please know that if you do choose to help financially or otherwise, everything and anything is greatly appreciated.”

Just a quick update to let everyone know that after 4 very interesting weeks in hospital I'm back at my Mom's house. Going in to the hospital regularly as an out patient and monitoring the transplant closely. Still a long road ahead but moving forward every day.

Thanks, Gord :)

Today this crazy adventure takes another step in the right direction. I am being admitted to VGH to begin my stem cell transplant. For the next week I will undergo intense chemo and radiation. I am scheduled to receive the transplant on Jan 31st. I need to send a huge than you to the anonymous donor where ever they happen to be in this b world, as well as everyone who has helped to support me in so many ways along this journey. If everything goes as expected I will be in the hospital for a month or so and then stay in Vancouver for a few more months to monitor the transpolar. Big smiles and hugs to everyone!

Time for another update.

I just found out that they found an unrelated donor match for a stem cell transplant. I need to go through a bunch of tests over the next month and they are planning to do the transplant near the end of January.

It will mean a week of chemo and radiation followed by 5-6 weeks in the hospital. Then close monitoring for a few months.

Thanks to everyone for their love and support!

Merry Christmas

I'm well overdue for an update. Firstly I can't thank everyone enough for all of your support in so many ways :) it really helps.

I found out that my brother Russ is not a match for stem cell transplant. The doctors are looking into some other possible matches but that could take a few months and lessens the chances of success. In the meantime I only have 3 treatments left in this second round of chemo. I have had to contend with some headaches, nausea and poor vision problems that the doctors are working on sorting out.

I am in good spirits and am happy to have such wonderful people around me throughout this ordeal. Every day is another day towards a cure and getting back home.
