Fund Stephanie's NLG Delegation to Colombia Trip

Hi everyone,

I was recently given the unique opportunity to join the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) delegation to Colombia, taking place on August 3-10, 2019. The purpose of this trip is to continue " Guild’s on-going solidarity work in Colombia and Latin America, particularly given Colombia’s geopolitical importance, the rise of the far right in the region and the increasing political and military alliance with the U.S."

The trip's objectives are also the following:
1. To evaluate and monitor the implementation of the Peace Accords in Colombia between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP guerrilla, including an analysis of the normalization, disarmament and the role of the U.S. in a post-conflict Colombia;
2. Learn about the human rights issues facing rural, afro-Colombian, and indigenous communities due to the lack of judicial guarantees, ongoing armed conflict, targeting by paramilitary forces, mining and forms of extractivist industry;
3. Learn about the human rights issues facing, labor unions, and human rights defenders;
4. Make visible the ongoing human rights violations and lack of implementation of the historic Peace Accords. 

A little about me
I'm currently a Juris Master student at Emory University. My degree focuses on human rights law. In my free time, I volunteer for causes relating to immigrants rights, labor rights, and anti-human trafficking.  I am excited about the opportunity to join the NLG delegation because in my academic and professional work I have focused on the Colombian peace process, an issue that has affected me as the daughter of Colombian immigrants. I look forward to joining the delegation and using what I learn to educate others on the current conditions of the peace process from direct sources.
