Fulton Schools has participated in the Salmon in the Classroom program through the Michigan DNR for 6 years.
Over the course of that time, we have developed partnerships with the Michigan DNR, the Michigan DEQ, the Gratiot County Community Foundation and numerous individuals. We are trying to transition into additional research with this project but are in need of funds to support the purchase of a research-grade fish system (as seen below). We would like to use the system to integrate the new Michigan Science Standards and do an in-depth study of our salmon in the high school classes. Part of that study would include doing a comprehesive analysis of food rate to growth ratios, density versus size studies, and various other student generated research questions.
Our project has turned into a collaborative study that helps students develop scientific skills of research and interpretation to understand natural phenomena as it pertains to Salmon and their environment.
With our previous work, we have discovered a population of Burbot that inhabits local tributaries. This population is confined to the river system due to a series of dams both upstream and downstream from where we have discovered them. We have been granted a "scientific collectors permit" from the DNR and would also like to use this research system to do additional studies on the burbot as well. There is very little research on tributary confined burbot and our students are on the forefront of discovery and research for this population.
The purchase of a research-grade system would allow us to continue our study of our classroom salmon as well as create new learning opportunities and discovery. It would also allow us to develop a better understanding of the land-locked population of burbot that has been discovered in our local streams.
We are excited about the future learning opportunities that this project is creating. We look forward to completing this fundraising campaign to advance our understanding of local populations of fish.
