Our friend Helena  Sheehan Ryan from Doneraile in Co. Cork tells her story as follow:

My story began in 2016 after giving birth to my second child. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer at which it was at stage 1 but in a short space of time went to stage 2. I began radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytheraphy. This brought me to 2017 all treatments were successful and I was in remission. I was healthy enough and my positive mental attitude allowed me to return to work which I truly enjoyed caring for people on a daily basis. Fast forward to November 2018, I found a lump on my neck. After visiting my GP, I was referred to CUH where I met my consultant who recommended a biopsy. Two weeks later we were told the devastating news the cervical cancer was back and had spread to the lymph nodes in my stomach, chest and neck but luckily hadn’t hit any of the major organs. As the result showed stage 4 cancer, I began the fight again, as positive and strong as ever. I continued to work until new year’s eve which was the week before my treatment began. I was hoping to continue to work during my treatment but was advised not to by my consultant. Aggressive chemotherapy began in January 2019. Shortly into the treatment I was hit with major side effects which has affected my mobility. I have spent short of 3 weeks in hospital undergoing tests to resolve this side effect but nothing to date has worked significantly. As a result the chemotherapy has been postponed.

As a wife to a very supportive husband, and a mother to two adorable children, our daughter is 4 years old and our son 3 years I need to fight this battle. My husband has had to take time out of work to look after me and our two children. I have amazing support from family and friends which we are ever so grateful. At present we are living in a mobile home which is very comfortable, however it’s not suitable for a family of four and for my medical needs. We are fortunate enough to have our house at plastering stage and this is why I’m reaching out to anyone who is in a position to support us. . Any money we had saved to finish our house such as kitchen and bedroom furniture is being used to pay for our everyday living.

Any donation would be very much appreciated. Helena’s wish is to get her and her family into their new home for the summer to give them a more comfortable home and for when she returns to chemotherapy to know that it will be more accessible for her to recover. Helena and her husband are ensuring everyone that they will be giving any surplus donations to the CUH, Oncology Department once their house is liveable.

As friends of Helena she is a fighter with huge positivity, a dedicated home maker and wife and most of all a truly amazing Mammy. We are all here to support Helena and her family. Thank you all in advance.
