Health Education - Philippines

Donation protected
We have started this page to raise donations to volunteer in the Philippines in coordination with “Health in Action”! Any help you can offer would be truly appreciated! :)

Manila, Philippines is one of the most crowded cities on Earth with a lack of adequate water, housing, education and sanitation which has led to an increase in health problems.

Why the Philippines?

·         1 in 4 people living in poverty

·         4 out of 10 families don’t have a decent place to live

·         The country is a major exporter of health workers, yet some rural and poor areas still face critical shortages.

·         The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in South East Asia, hit each year by an average of 20 typhoons a year

What will the money go towards?

·         Airfare and some living expenses in Manila

·         Buying basic hygiene kits for families

·         Funds to cover 10 children’s wider education costs ( public schooling is free in the Philippines but it’s not the only financial consideration; school supplies, uniform, meals and transportation add to the costs)

·         Donations to help rehabilitate the slums in Manila

What will I do there?
We have an interest in health education and promoting public health initiatives. Working in the NHS and private medical sector has equipped us with the experience and skills to be able to raise health awareness and educate the locals. Having volunteered previously with charities such as Oxfam and the Red Cross, we have a strong awareness of what is required to make long-lasting positive changes. I am also studying a masters in Healthcare Leadership and Strategy with a strong focus on behavioral change.

·         Raising awareness about preventing diseases such as malaria and Aids

·         Providing education about basic nutrition, preventive measures and personal care through workshops

·         Assisting in education outreach

·         In my spare time, we  will be assisting with the rehabilitating of slums in Manila

Will it REALLY make a difference?

·         A recent study published in the Lancet medical journal showed that health education by volunteers contributed to improvements in maternal and child health in Manila

·         In another study the impact of volunteering on health, there was evidence that volunteers improved self-rated health, mental health, health behaviors and coping ability

Any donation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, thank you, and thank you
