Bring Dobby Home From Bali

Donation protected
On Friday, October 19th at 1:00 a.m. we arrived in Bali for our honeymoon. We had previous plans to travel here three years ago but unfortunately, Mount Ruang erupted, causing all flights to be cancelled.

While brainstorming honeymoon destinations, there was no doubt in our minds that we wanted to spend our time in this country. After landing in Denspasar, we made our way to Seminyak...and our lives were forever changed that day.

We awoke early Friday morning and decided to wander through the nearby streets. It wasn’t long into our adventure when we heard ear-piercing screams from ahead. It turned out that a 3-4 month old puppy, who we later named “Dobby,” was trampled by a scooter flying down the road.

When we arrived to him, a small crowd of people were gathered around Dobby. He was hiding behind a stationary scooter, afraid and in pain. However, it wasn’t long until people began to disperse and go about their daily lives. The only ones who stayed to find a solution for Dobby were a few Australians and us.

On his left leg, the elbow and armpit areas were skinned and bloody. We thought he must have broken his leg as he was holding it up and crying. We asked people nearby if there was a vet around but no one seemed to know. So we took matters into our own hands.

After telling the Australians that we would get the proper care for Dobby, they agreed and generously gave us some money to aid in vet bills. We then flagged a taxi and brought Dobby to the vet. Before picking him up, we gently checked the rest of his body to make sure there wasn’t any additional pain. It was in that taxi ride that we named him Dobby because of his big, floppy ears.

The vet’s x-ray machinery was down, so we were off to another location called Sunset Vet. There we got his x-rays and thankfully he didn’t have any broken bones or serious damage. All he needed were some antibiotics and pain medication.

Dobby stayed at the vet for two days, and each morning we scootered over to pay a visit. Every time we walked through the door, his face lit up and his tail was rapidly wagging. It was clear Dobby missed us as much as we missed him.

On the third day, we picked up Dobby from the vet and took him with us to our next destination: Ubud. We already knew that he was a sweet boy but learned that he was now a part of our family during our short time spent with him.

We posted in several Bali groups on Facebook along with asking our Airbnb hosts if they knew of someone wanting a dog as we didn’t think it was possible bringing Dobby back to the United States. From social media, we learned of a pet transportation service called Seven Heaven who coordinated transporting Bali animals to different countries, including the U.S.

With three dogs already, we were torn whether or not to bring Dobby back with us due to the hefty transportation fee. But after talking with potential people who were interested in Dobby, we found it in his best interest to live his life with us in Florida.

Now that we have made the decision to make Dobby an official member of the family, we have started the relocation process to get him home. We have communicated with Seven Heaven along with individuals who have successfully received their loved ones in the U.S. and are confident that Dobby will make it to us safely. He will be arriving on Thanksgiving and we couldn’t be more thankful to introduce him to his new siblings and give him a life full of happiness.

We appreciate any donations as it will help us cover some of the transportation fees and all of the other costs associated with getting him home. Even if you choose not to donate, we hope our story touched you and urged you to help animals all over the world find the love they deserve :)
