Free Books for Young Women
Donation protected
Would you like to help provide brand new books to the young women of The Leadership Academy in Baltimore?
I started out on the streets of Baltimore and reading truly saved my life. I am now a columnist for Salon. My work has been published in the New York Times, Guardian, Rolling Stone, and other publications. I have a master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Baltimore. I'm a college professor at the University of Baltimore and founder of the BMORE Writers Project. I was also lucky enough to be the recipient of numerous awards including Ford's Men of Courage and a BME Fellowship. I am from and live in East Baltimore and now I want to return the favor.
My team and I are doing something powerful in Baltimore City Public Schools, we are getting young people excited about reading! I am committed to visiting and providing free copies of The Beast Side and The Cook Up to all students in Baltimore City Public Schools. We have helped to donate over a 1000 copies but there is so much more work to be done and we need your help.
Now more than ever we need to make sure our young people are critical thinkers and the best way to do that is to get them reading. Young people love to read, we just have to make culturally relevant material available. We have to help our youth and move them forward.
Please HELP!
Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women reached out to me and we already donated 90 books to the young women of that school. I'm planning to do a schoolwide assembly on May 17th to lecture on the power of reading, even if we do not reach our goal in time.
All of the funds will be received by me and I will use them to buy the books, the young women will get to keep the books after their teachers finish using them in their lessons.
Let's complete our goal!
