Frank Guerrero's Stroke Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Dad had an ischemic stroke that turned hemorrhagic on Friday, February 15, 2019.

It all started when he was awakened with a sharp pain in his temple at 3am. Thinking nothing of it, he took an aspirin, and went back to sleep. A little restless, but nothing out of the norm, he continued to sleep and he just wanted to be left alone. When he got up to go to the restroom, he collapsed.

Mom immediately called 911. He was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, where the CT scan revealed a large bleed on the right side of his brain.

Because the bleed was so large, he was transferred to Kaiser Sunset for possible surgery. Thankfully, surgery ended up not being necessary at the time.

He was recovering well, and was transferred the following week to Glendale Adventist Hospital for Acute Rehab. The first week there he showed improvement, but that didn’t continue. The medications made him take a downward spiral. He was unable to do physical or occupational therapy.

Twenty-five days later, dad was transferred back to Kaiser Woodland Hills for re-evaluation. His hallucinations were so extreme, he was transferred to the psych ward at Motion Picture Hospital. He was treated there with anti-psychotic drugs, yet, remained completely delusional.

On his second day there, he was found unresponsive with food in his mouth. His blood pressure plummeted to 70/45. Dad was immediately transferred to West Hills Hospital and put in ICU for 2 days.

Dad eventually stabilized, and was transferred to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. His blood pressure has remained unstable ever since. Everyday has been different and the journey has been a complete roller-coaster ride for our family.

Dad is in his 7th hospital since February 15th. The hospital bills have already begun to pile up from the various hospital fees, which include $2000 from their current hospital, $2000 from his Acute Rehab at Glendale Adventist, $1350 from the Motion Picture Hospital, and more bills are coming.

While we were hoping he would graduate to rehab, the doctors at the rehab facility feel that he isn't the right candidate. At the moment, Dad can stand upright, only on some days - and this is with full assistance from a nurse. As a result, he is not a good candidate to go to a skilled nursing facility, which would be covered by his insurance, but even then for only two weeks.

We are now faced with covering the cost of a Board and Care Facility for his continued recovery at $3500 a month. We need to come up with the money for the first month's payment on the day he is transferred there. The doctors are looking to transfer him as soon as possible, which will require an additional ambulance fee.

The doctors have said that once he has progressed well enough to leave the Board and Care Facility, he  would be accepted to skilled nursing, but that would require another transportation fee.

Our parents are very prideful, and would never ask for assistance from others, but they and we have exhausted all of our resources, so we are now asking for help.

We thank you in advance for your contribution to our father's care.
