My mom tells me that my heroes when I was little were different than other kids. Rather than reading me books about fictional charactars -- I preferred nonfiction and the stories were almost always about historic figures or ones that described other cultures. One of my favorites was about William Penn and the beginning of Pennsylvania, the other about a young Abraham Lincoln.
When Obama first came on the scene, I was too young to vote but had many conversations with my mom and successfully presuaded her to vote for him instead of Hilary Clinton in the 2008 primary. One of the first of many many political debates! At the end of the day, it came down to a simple arguement. If there was space for him in our polictical landscape, there was space for me.
I interned for the California Democratic Party in our last election and like millions of others was devastated at the result. I remember saying to my mom, I feel like my country hates me. It was a rough few weeks.
But I realized that my best contribution to where we are at now is to acitvely pursue and partner with those working to preserve and maintain our country's legacy and strong democracy.
I am currently enrolled at Chico State, majoring in economics and political science. This past semester I interned at the Community Legal Information Center, aiding those who had been victimized by shady business practices.
I have been accepted into a yearlong study abroad program in Germany to study Politics and Global Economics . I hope to learn more about our foreign relationships and ways we can help impoverished nations.
I am excited for this huge opportunity in my life, but as many of you know it doesn't come cheap! This summer I am working to save some spending money and my mom is dedicated to helping, but every little bit I can raise helps to take the pressure off of her. She is the sole provider for myself and my little brother.
It's not easy to ask for help, but I would be grateful for any amount you would be willing to give. In return, I can promise to be one of the many young people out there right now engaging in the political conversation working hard to preserve our rights and civil liberties.
