For the Love of Mothers

Donation protected
As we all do, I thought i had a little more time. September of last year my grandmother, who raised me as her own child and whom I affectionately call  Mommy , was diagnosed with lung Cancer. On the first of April 2018 , I was given the news that Mommy was hospitalized due to a really bad fall. While in the hospital for the fall, test results showed that her cancer had spread to other organs.

About 5 years ago, I moved over 4000 miles away from Mommy who lives in Southern New Jersey, to begin my own life on the island of Hawai’i . I still visited as much as I could and called as often as well. We remained close.

When i received the news that my grandmother was ill, I immediately knew that I was going to go home and take care of her. Since living on the islands I found my home and my husband to be. I contacted him at home, since I was away traveling, to tell him the news. Also to tell him that I had to go to her. Of course he agreed. I am a chef and I work independently, making it easier for me to move at will. We decided that I would finish up the job I was currently doing, which was a passover meal on Maui, I would return home, close up my pending affairs and orders and I could make it there by April 16 using frequent flyer miles. Myself, my partner and Mommy thought this to be wonderful.

April 5, 2018, I receive a call from my niece that Mommy passed that afternoon. I had just spoken to her the day before. She laughed at the charcoal face mask I was wearing on my face. One the day she passed, she was surrounded by love, at home on the couch. Her last activity was holding her first great-great grandchild, who is also my first great niece (im so young). My family facetimed me in so I could see her lying peacfully on the couch before her body was taken away. It brought me peace and a smile seeing that her tiny dog my brother purchased for her, was still hanging out in her lap.

I only want to pay my respects once more.
