For the Love of Betty

Imagine being told that your body was no longer your own; that the natural ability to control the movement in your limbs would slowly be taken from you. And there was nothing you could do about it. You were virtually helpless…held hostage to an unthinkable medical monster.
For Betty this scenario is not only a disturbing fact.
It is her fate.
Three years ago life as she knew it took a devastating turn when Betty received a shocking diagnosis: she had ALS, or Lou Gherig’s Disease. At once, this beautiful, independent, vivacious and energetic woman was faced with a terrifying health battle. A fight for her life that would require a miracle to win. ALS is in large part untreatable and every bit incurable.
In the months that followed her diagnosis, Betty turned to her tremendous faith, impressive will and positive spirit to pull her through the newly challenging moments.
But with each day, the disease progresses. ALS is a thief. It is robbing Betty of her strength and the ability to control her bodily motions.
To date, Betty can no longer stand or walk of her own accord. Using a wheelchair now, many once-simple and basic activities are nearly impossible for her to carry out unassisted. Even the ability to use her own bathroom has become undoable, causing her to make use of a portable potty chair or to use the YMCA restroom to shower. Neither scenario is remotely desirable. Neither affords Betty the privacy or dignity she deserves.
Betty desperately needs help funding a home renovation project that would transform her bathroom into a safe place for her to meet her personal hygiene needs. To convert this space into one that is able to accommodate her handicap will require funds well beyond her financial reach.
Through this campaign we hope to provide the monetary assistance to see this important bathroom transformation come to be, and help make Betty's life just a little easier.

For those of you privileged enough to know Betty, I am sure you can attest to her amazing personality. She is truly one of a kind. Betty is a wonderful daughter, a devoted wife and an outstanding mother & grandmother. Her three successful daughters, Angelique, Jennifer and Marissa are a living testament to their mom’s selflessness, tenacity, commitment and above all – her love.
As for myself, though Betty and I are officially known as cousins, in reality she is the big sister Fate forgot to give me. Having her in my life for over fifty years only makes me wish for fifty more.

In closing, to those who share Betty's unwavering faith and devotion to God, we kindly request that you spare a prayer for her that she may find peace of mind, strength for her battle, and perseverance in the face of this daunting adversity.
