Danny Conlisk is one of the best and brightest Coupeville has to offer, and we have a chance to help him achieve his dream of competing at the National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.
Danny, who will be a senior this fall, is slated to run in the 400, but needs to go cross country to Greensboro, North Carolina for the meet, which runs July 23-29.
The money raised would pay for plane tickets for Danny, mom Dawnelle, and sister MaryBeth, as well as a rental car for the trio to use while on the ground.
Danny is a three-time state meet qualifier in track, and finished 2nd at the 1A championships in the 400 this spring.
Last fall, while traveling and training with South Whidbey High School, he became the first Coupeville athlete to advance to state in cross country in eight years.
Inspired by his efforts on the trails, Coupeville is relaunching its own cross country program this year, after a two-decade absence.
That will give an an estimated two dozen high school and middle school athletes a chance to run this fall.
Danny is not only an accomplished runner, but a strong student who sits on the School Board.
As I have written about his exploits over the past three years, I have seen Danny grow as an athlete and a young man.
Some of the biggest moments in local sports in recent years have come from the quiet, friendly Conlisk coming from behind to blitz rival runners as his own teammates holler themselves crazy.
He is the real deal, a young man who has used running to shape his world in a positive way.
Giving Danny the chance to compete at the top level of his sport, while his proud family watches him achieve his dream, is something worth supporting.
