6 year old Florence was recently diagnosed with a fatal but curable congenital heart condition called ASD and VSD, i.e. two holes in the wall supposed to separate the upper and lower heart chambers, respectively. Her deoxygenated blood is mixing with her oxygenated blood constantly. This means her heart needs to work double thus putting pressure on her already strained lungs. Her treatment requires 2 safe but complex procedures for her malformed heart and pressured lungs which cannot be done in Ghana. The only specialist pediatric heart hospital in West Africa (Korlebu in Ghana) recommended Florence be taken abroad for treatment beacuse of the complexity of her condition.
Florence has a maximum life expectancy of 20 years, most likely much shorter, which comes with long and difficult suffering towards the final years, once her medication starts loosing effectiveness. When we first saw the child's condition, who at nearly 6 looked like a malnourished 4 yo, we did everything we could to stabilise her condition. But without your donations enabling an operation soon, preventing the damage to her lungs becoming irreversible, Florence will have no chance for survival.
The cost of the operation is €34,140. Through the brilliant endeavours of Stefanie and her Mom (Molly), other in-laws and friends in Germany we have found a hospital in Berlin willing to accept her for the procedure and even accommodate her mom until she is ready to leave the hospital. Since then, we raised money off line for one flight already.
Now we need an estimated additional €2,500 to cover the flight for her mom, visa costs and post operative care back in Ghana, as well as other unknown medical costs such as medication. We are therefore kindly asking for your help in chipping in any small amount to make up this sum so Florence can have the chance of a normal life.
When we moved to Ghana two years ago, Dorinda our Nanny moved in with us and has been taking care of our daughter and son ever since. We can be thankful to God for two healthy kids but cannot turn a blind eye when Florence who literally would have had no chance of survival had we not been able to leverage resources and opportunities to help her. We have brought her into the home as a family member, stabilised her condition and have paid all medical bills so far. We have come this far and need some help to ensure Florence can just play like a normal kid without getting easily exhausted.
