Florence’s Story by Her Father
Florence Shuen departed this life too early. A loving wife and mother of two boys suddenly passed away on March 8, 2019. She is survived by her husband Royce and two young sons, Tyler, 6, and Chase, 4.
Florence’s story is an everyday story. A hardworking wife and mother of two youngsters, Florence worked two full time jobs and struggled like any another American family to raise her kids and make a good home. An accountant by trade and a cohesive force in her family and among friends.
Florence tragically died at age 41 from a brain aneurysm forever changing the lives of so many she touched. In honor of her memory, the family is requesting donations to help support her children during this difficult transition to a new life without their mother. We want to give the boys and their father an opportunity to rebuild their lives and hope you’ll spread the word among friends and colleagues.
A bit more about Florence…
Florence began her journey in Hong Kong back when it was a British Colony. She was born to a mom, Winnie, now my wife, who was soon to be a single mom struggling in very trying times to raise what would become my two beautiful and energetic daughters. Winnie spent her days working multiple jobs to feed Florence and her sister, but all together they pitched in wholeheartedly to make a better life. It was a rough beginning for a small family but found new hope and a new beginning 30 years ago when we married and sought a better life in the United States.
Florence made good on her new freedoms, learning a new language, customs and traditions that would later shape her future family. Every day she dreamed of making a better life than the one she knew in the old Hong Kong. To her friends, Florence was strong, loyal and had great conviction. Florence made friends across cultures and geographies. She had her own rudder, even stubbornness at times but never yielded to be blown by the wind. She dreamed of one day having a family with kids and devoted her time and strength to making this happen. She taught herself accounting and met her husband, Royce, settling down to raise two loveable boys, Tyler and Chase.
One remarkable day we learned of the coming of our Tyler. Fondly called Chubs, he was an unbelievable burst of joy to us. Like Florence, he could befriend us all and enjoys the diverse company of others. Florence devoted her life to bring a calm but broad understanding of the world into Tyler’s life and later blessed us with Chase, his younger brother. Fondly called Yo, he possesses his mother’s charm and zest for life. Like his mother, he has a twinkle in his eye with a strong zest for family connection. Our Flo often dubbed the boys, The Mario Brothers; and they will remain a strong presence in our lives as our beloved grandchildren.
Flo hustled daily to make a real difference for her husband and children, making the American dream of owning a home within reach. She sacrificed herself for her family and drove two hours daily to keep Tyler in the wonderful Magic Murray Elementary School in Dublin, CA, so he could have a brighter future with even greater opportunity than she.
Flo was taken from us too early, leaving behind boys ages 4 and 6 with no mother and a harsh reality of life overshadowed by a void left by her absence. Our family will pull together once again. As her mom and dad, and as grandparents, we have and will continue to upend our lives to care for them as long as we are able. We humbly ask for any support you can provide or give to this little family as a safety net to especially get through the next year, fulfilling Florence’s dream for her family to survive. We know she will be watching in spirit.
