Flame Tree Project

The Story: I have been commissioned by Kate Whitworth and Minnamurra Primary School in NSW to write the inaugural work for "The Flame Tree Project", a choral project which will bring together 60 to 80 choristers who do not normally have access to regular choral performance opportunities. The work I am writing this year will capture the wonder and natural beauty of the waterfalls in the Illawarra, composed in collaboration with the students of Minnamurra Primary School.

The Teacher + Outcomes: Kate has worked tirelessly to secure grants and funding to establish this project, as well as inspiring her students to respond to the beauty of the environment around them to provide the basis for the lyrics of the piece. This commissioned work and the resulting choral performances will allow students to see their words brought to life in an immediate and meaningful way, give voice to a part of their environment and surrounds which is deeply relevant to them, and the opportunity to perform something uniquely Australian in a formal choral performance.

Why The Funding Campaign? I was inspired to accept the inaugural commissioned based upon the forward-thinking, persistence, and optimism of the students and their teacher, Kate, in putting this idea forward. I wanted to help establish this choral project in the hope that other young, up-and-coming composers may take on this project and have this unique experience. I am also a strong advocate for bringing high-quality, engaging and positive choral experiences to all students, and allowing access to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

This funding campaign is to raise a $500.00 honorarium for the next young composer to fulfil this commission, and to allow this project to continue for a second year.

Developing composers rely upon a fair and equitable payment to allow them to devote the right amount of creative energy and time to a commission, to develop their craft, and to connect with different schools, students, and organisations who will engage with, and perform their works. They cannot do this without appropriate funding. I am incredibly fortunate that I do not have to rely upon the payment to be able to accept this project, as I am a full-time secondary music teacher.

I would like to acknowledge Kate's work, and allow the opportunity for this initiative to continue in  2020.

VERY IMPORTANT: For those of you who know Kate Whitworth, and any of the other music staff connected to this project, PLEASE KEEP THIS UNDER WRAPS!

(She and her students have no idea about this ...yet!)

With appreciation,

Annie
