Help Ceci fight cancer & chubby up!
We just found out that someone we love has cancer...
She is Ceci, Mami, Chela or Tita: a daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. To us, she is the nucleus at the center of our big family, our rock, and our glue! A selfless caretaker, she is reluctant to put herself first even as she faces stage 3 lung cancer (Update: stage 4) (AKA "the gremlin") So we need your help….
It’s her turn to get some love. And as it turns out, cancer is expensive! There are the obvious medical bills but also the less obvious costs such as eating super healthy and going to a cancer center far from home. And it’s time for this should-be bikini model to CHUBBY up! DOCTORS’ ORDERS! Did you know that this flaca has survived 6 brain aneurysms? SHE FIGHTS like a real woman– WATCH OUT! Help us to show "the gremlin" what a real fight is all about.
Stage 3a Non-Small Cell Adenocarcinoma, surgical candidate.
Update: Stage 4 and not a surgical candidate but absolutely ready for anything!
We have set up two savings accounts for our distinct financial challenges:
1) Medical Expenses
2) Miscellaneous Costs: includes additional expenses related to defeating cancer, such as paying for organic super foods and filling the tank to drive an hour away for treatment.
HOW ELSE CAN YOU HELP:
We would greatly appreciate any yummy, healthy, calorie dense recipes that you have to share.
We also strongly believe in the power of the mind and of prayer. Please include Caecilia, her loved ones, and her doctors/nurses in your prayers.
Keep on her cheerful and loving spirit!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking a moment to read our story and for your help!
Next, congratulations! We have made it three years. Three years. Congratulations to Mami, and congratulations to every person who has battled alongside her. Mami has survived to see two new grandsons born: her namesake, Caesar in 2015, and Ricardo in 2016.
Now, for the hard part (please do not stop reading till the end):
Last week, we prepared for surgery. As you may know, Mami suffered a femur fracture less than a year ago, which has complicated her recovery. The wound has not healed despite a rod and screws placed during surgery. A “re-do” surgery became our great hope to end her interminable pain. However, 2.5 hours before surgery, the orthopedic surgeon cancelled plans to operate, citing her weak state. Imagine our surprise, considering her condition had not changed for days! “Give her two weeks to gain weight and strength,” he said. The once emboldened surgeon later reneged on the two weeks option as well. With surgery off the table, we waited to hear from her oncologist.
In a head-spinning turn of events, Mami’s treating oncologist of three years TERMINATED HER TREATMENT, cancelled her IV nutrients and MRI orders. The oncologist made this mystifying decision based on her appearance just that day! He took the easy way out of this and not the RIGHT way. He didn’t consult us, he just gave up. He couldn’t give us a reason why.
Since Mami’s diagnosis, as a family, we refer to ourselves as the Warriors. Well, these Warriors scrambled in order to rally a team to our side. After six hellish days and with the help of the hospitalist and many doctors who gave opinions, we achieved a successful ambulance transfer to Moffit Cancer Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Moffit, ranked 9 in the country, may just be our Hail Mary. She’s been there for 1 day and surgery is scheduled. All doctors, nurses and staff seem to be more involved and are giving her a chance to keep fighting!
Some of the family will relocate and travel back and forth to support Mami during her treatment at Moffit (private message for details). In a way, the choice to take her to Moffit presents our greatest challenge in her recovery thus far: separating the family. Pray for us please. Keep sending those good vibes. If those in the Tampa area can offer support of any kind, please let us know. And please, any contribution you can spare, we humbly ask for your financial help. I assure you, the Warriors will pay it forward in the future.
We’re praying for a solution so she can go enjoy the season, come home and help us decorate the house with all her beautiful bows. We had a very rough year with lots of hospitalizations and surgeries, bad and good news, ups and downs...lots of medical bills, lots of restarts and sudden stops. Our family has been affected by one of the most heart ripping diseases ever but we’ve found our way to heal, cope, grieve, go on and smile, love and forgive. Have a Merry Christmas...hug and love your friends and family...say “I love you” and take pictures...make memories, don’t take your time with your loved ones for granted and don’t take your health for granted!!!

I am really bad at asking for help...In fact, I am so bad at it that I never do. I don't like to inconvenience people. This right here is my precious family, stronger than the bond that holds diamonds together. We stand as one compound organism against a dwindling society. Love is the key, unconditional, unbiased, and wholehearted. Right now one of our core members, my mother, is sick. She is a fighting soldier in the war between health and sickness and needs reinforcements. She is as tough as a bull, yet at fragile as the rose from beauty and the beast. Nothing is impossible, anything helps, and everything is appreciated. If you can help in any form that you know possible, not necessarily financially, then please join us as we defeat the odds by kicking this thing's ass. This is me asking for help, from anyone and everyone who is willing. Whatever God you worship, keep us in your prayers. Thank you !! Peace and Love.
