I am Carl Fisher, the co-founder and primary craftsman behind Fisher of Pens.
Fisher of Pens started as a small family business making pens on a wood lathe. Over the last 6 years my wife Chrissy and I have improved on our craft and established a home in the bespoke fountain pen family. We have made many lifelong friends among this community including customers and enthusiasts around the world as well as other pen makers and industry greats.
For the last few years we have been creating our custom pens on a small budget metal lathe. It was purchased 2nd hand and it is limited in size and capability. The machine has become a bit of a safety concern and is no longer functioning as needed. It is definitely beyond it's useful days.
This is where you and this GoFundMe can help. We need a new lathe to keep creating for you, our customers and friends as well as introduce new offerings that we have not been capable of with our current setup.
My goal is to raise $5,000 or more to purchase a new Precision Matthews high precision lathe and the supporting pieces that go along with it. With this lathe we can expand the range of material offerings, offer better precision and create new designs. But the biggest benefit is that we can do all of this with a safer tool.
We need your help to keep moving forward. The pen community that we serve has proven time and time again that they lift up and support those that are part of the family and we’re in need of a boost.
Q: Why don't we have the money to do this on our own?
A: Over the last few years the bulk of our profits have been fed back into various other aspects of the business as well as supplement our household income to support our three rapidly growing children. At this time the rainy day fund does not have a major tool purchase in the budget and without some help we won't be able to maintain the craft.
Q: How long will it take to receive my reward?
A: That depends on the reward. Discount codes will be provided right away.
For reward pens, the clock starts ticking once the new tooling arrives and can be setup and tuned. I would estimate the following:
* Completed pens will be made once the new tooling is in place and you can expect 2-3 weeks from the time I start your pen until it is complete and ready for shipping.
* Top tier donors that qualify for a collaboration effort between Fisher of Pens and Jonathon Brooks of Carolina Pen Company for a Urushi pen can expect 2-3 weeks for the pen to be made and sent to Jonathon and 3-4 months for the Urushi work.
All donors who receive product will be queued on a first in, first out basis with the exception of the Urushi pens. In all cases those will be created first to send to Jonathon to start the lenghty process.
Q: Will the reward pens be numbered?
A: Yes, the reward pens will all be engraved with Fisher of Pens and serial numbered 1 of xx as limited edition GoFundMe supporter pens.
Q: What nibs will be provided with your reward pens?
A: Urishi reward pens will receive your choice of 14k gold nib. All others will receive your choice of steel nib. Nibs are Jowo brand.
Q: How are you still posting in-progress photos on Instagram?
A: As I still have commitments to meet for previous orders, I'm doing the best with what I have using my old wood lathe and longer manual processes. These methods are neither sustainable or profitable but necessary to fulfill my obligations.
