Save Historic First Lutheran Church

Join this urgent campaign to SAVE one of the true architectural and historic treasures of Fort Lauderdale Florida, the First Lutheran Church. Located downtown at 441 NE Third Avenue in Flagler Village, the congregation has recently left this building and it has been sold to a developer whose original intention was to knock it down and build a condo development on the whole block. Our efforts, which started in September 2016, have caused the developer to change his plans and include a modification to the structure, but the only real way to save this building from demolition in the present and future is for the City to APPROVE our application for Historic Landmark Designation.

In December the Historical Preservation Board of the City of Fort Lauderdale voted 9-0 unanimously for Approval of the Historic Landmark Designation on all 5 criteria presented. The Broward Trust for Historic Preservation also voted unanimously in support for this historical application. Flagler Village Association also voted unanimously in support of historical designation for this structure.
At the City Commission meeting on Feb. 21, this item was deferred, after hearing from approximately 30 people who made public comment in favor of historic preservation. On May 2 this agenda item will be brought back, with new plans from the developer. Our goal continues to be the same, to have Historic Landmark Designation granted by the City.

Funds from this campaign will be used for Historic Landmark Application fees, Research, Consultancy, Advocacy, social Media campaigns and legal measures.
