FIRST Lego League for Woodlawn (Portland, OR)

Donation protected
We are raising money to support the formation of new teams for FIRST Lego League Jr in the Woodlawn community, serving students at our Title I elementary school (a STEAM focused school) in partnership with the SUN after school program.  Raising funds to support the program is necessary so that it is open to all students regardless of ability to pay.  Funds are needed as soon as possible to get started!

This year’s theme is “Mission Moon !”, so the projects focus on what it would be like to send an engineering team to explore the moon.  Each week the teams will explore a new topic such as how to get water or energy on the moon, and build Lego models to illustrate their ideas. At the end of the season the kids take a field trip to OMSI where they will present their Lego model and a poster about what they learned.  There will be dozens of other teams from around Oregon at the event, so the kids also get to see other teams’ models, talk to other kids about their ideas, and participate in other fun activities.

Funds will be used to purchase materials (kits), for registration fees, and if needed for tablets.  Any funds we raise above the target will be used to support the program expanding next year to serve more students.  Some of the funds raised this year will be for materials that can be used for future teams.

2019 Team fees total: $748
-$428 [$107 for Team Registration plus Season Kit x 4 teams]
-$320 [$80 for OMSI Expo registration x 4 teams]

Start-up materials total: $1248
-$748 - [$187 per Robotics Kit (will be reused in future years) x 4 kits]
-$504 [$126 per refurbished tablet (will be reused in future years) x 4 tablets; in-kind donation of compatible tablets would be welcomed and appreciated!]

Total Project Costs: $2000

The team coaches are raising these funds personally in order to quickly get the needed materials and register teams to start in January.  Any excess funds will be given to the non-profit after school program providing oversight and support for this volunteer community project, and saved in a dedicated fund for the teams to use next year.
