Fill a Terere kid's backpack

A community association rooted in centuries of resistance, Associação Cultural do Quilombo do Tereré was created to teach community members their history as proud descendants of an escaped slave (maroon) community and to maintain their traditional livelihoods in the shadows of one of Brazil's largest and most unequal metropolises, Salvador, Bahia. Trying to live off the land, respect nature and the spring from which they get their name (Fonte do Tereré), all while instilling in poor, Afro-Bahian children a sense that they are full citizens deserving of dignity in a nation that fails to see them as such. In addition to dealing with the general hardships associated with being black and poor in Brazil, Tereré has had to contend with the nation's economic crisis, which disproportionately affects those who are already vulnerable. Add to that rising school supply costs, and filling a child's school backpack is extra challenging (Cost of a single ballpoint pen in Brazil: around US$1; Cost of a box of 60 pens in the US: around US$5).  I'll be visiting Quilombo do Tereré in July and realized I have room in my luggage--so I want to do a flash fundraiser to bring some stuff. Let's fill some backpacks with pencils, pens, erasers, crayons, notebooks, and USB drives! Buying in bulk will allow me to fill more backpacks and send kids back to school ready to learn. Any amount will help! Check out their website (in Portuguese) and see some photos of the #UFinBahia trip to Tereré in 2016.
PS: If you want to donate school supplies directly, message me and I'll send you a way to get them to me.
