Fight for Roxie

Sweet 4-week old Roxie is fighting for her life at Penn Vet. Her care is currently estimated to be $500-$700 per day - please help us #FightForRoxie and give here the best chance possible! Here's her story and history:

Roxie, found orphaned on the streets of Philadelphia, was brought to me on July 19th. She was just a few days old, but latched right onto her bottle and seemed overall very healthy (and very fiesty!).

On August 4th, I noticed some suspicious looking spots on Roxie's paws. Ringworm is common in young kittens, and very contagious, so I spoke to our vet on the phone Monday 8/5 and took Roxie in for a skin scraping culture on Tuesday 8/6. Our directions were to treat with common fungal infection treatments: lime sulfur, and chlorhexidine.

By the end of the week, Roxie was looking much worse. However, she was still eating and acting normally. Friday evening, August 9th, Roxie's skin looked very irritated and she began eating less.

Saturday morning, 8/10, Roxie woke me up crying (unusual). She barely ate and wouldn't stand up. Her temperature dropped to a dangerously low 94.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and after warming her I rushed her to PennVet's emergency department.

After the doctors evaluated her, they deemed her skin was very irritated due to the fungal treatment and that she was likely very uncomfortable causing her not to eat. She was stable, her temperature normal, no respiratory distress. We left Penn with directions to stop treatment for a week and reevaluate with our primary vet at that time. We headed home. Roxie's first bill:

Within a few hours of us returning home, Roxie was in distress. She refused to eat, her temperature had risen, and she was even more lethargic. I rushed her back to Penn Vet where they immediately admitted her to the emergency department. She was put on IV fluids, antibiotics, and being closely monitored. Her blood smear showed a low white blood cell count. I paid a $350 deposit, with the estimate for her care at Penn being $500-$700 per day (as of right now we are on day 2 and at the high end of the estimate).

I spoke with the doctor currently taking care of Roxie this morning (Monday, August 12). Unfortunately, Roxie has not improved. Her doctor reports that she is still not eating much, is still quite lethargic, her belly is bloated, and her temperature is not regulating (she gets cold, they give her heat, her temperature goes up too high). At this time, they do not know what is causing Roxie to be so sick, but they have added pain meds in addition to IV fluids and antibiotics to help her feel more comfortable. The doctors have mentioned the possibility of a bacterial infection or a viral infection and I requested they do a Panleukopenia test despite it being more expensive and not 100% because we do have other fosters kitten in the home.

At this time, Roxie will remain at Penn. Her doctor will call me later today with an update on Roxie, the panleuk test, and an update with the bill. He did tell me that assuming $700 per day would be a safe bet pending how she does and what other treatment or testing she may need.

Please #FightForRoxie and donate, share, and send good vibes her way. She needs us - she needs Charlie's Army.
