Fight 4 Kristin

Donation protected
Matthew and Kristin need help covering unexpected medical expenses. Just three days after God blessed The Wollak's with the birth of a beautiful baby girl, Kristin was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS). Most of us, even after the hype over the infamous “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge”, still have no clue what ALS is or how it affects the life of those who suffer from this aggressive killer. While there is extensive research being done, there is still no cure.

Kristin is fighting the good fight to keep pressing forward. She remains hopeful and is in prayer daily as she continues to trust that our Savior has a plan for her. There is no cure for ALS, but she is stopping at nothing to nourish her body and rehabilitate her muscles. Sadly, that task is ever growing as her body has deteriorated to the point where she is unable to complete daily living activities without assistance. Things you and I take for granted are feats of great accomplishment for Kristin, even while being assisted. Right now, Kristin is unable to care for herself or Kamila and needs a full-time personal care attendant to help with daily living activities and help attend to the needs of Kamila, the couple's four month old baby. Her needs include help getting in/out of bed, getting dressed, showering, sitting/standing, maintaining personal hygiene, eating, taking medications, using the restroom, etc.

Kristin remains positive and hopeful. She is grateful every day to see Kamila and makes the best out of each situation; always finding the silver lining. Initially, like many ALS patients, they weren't sure things would progress and initially even thought perhaps the symptoms were simply due to pregancy. Then, as symptoms progressed,  they started to recognize the need for assistance. Hoping it was only temporary, the Wollak's have been very blessed in having friends/family lovingly volunteer to stay with Kristin throughout the day, while Matt goes to work. Now, we are learning more about the disease and it's progression for Kristin, they are needing to start putting assistance in place indefinitely.

God surrounded the family with wonderful neighbors who have helped by providing meals and attending to yardcare, laundry, and other tasks to help get by and they count every little blessing.

All that said, the most frustrating reality is the effect this disease has on the family. Kristin can't be left alone to care for the baby. She does not posess the strenghth to pick Kamila up. Nor does she have the motor controls to change a diaper or set of baby clothes. Matt is extremely devoted to his family and making sure Kristin is as comfortable as possible. However, doing that while maintaining a more than full time job, and handling a new baby has proven to be a challenge, as anyone would expect.  Respite care for Matt is also a high priority as he deals with the day to day struggles and the emotional toll this experience is taking.

The Wollak's have found themselves with no choice but to hire someone to care for both Kristin and Kamila while Matt works. It may come as a surprise, but a personal care attendant is not something covered by insurance and runs as an out-of-pocket expense.

Message from Matt:
I wouldn’t change anything for the trials of today are the blessings of tomorrow and result in growth. They are merely blessings in disguise as God has a calling for us. We wear this life with a badge of honor, not a chip on the shoulder. Every dollar helps and words cannot begin to express the gratitude we have your love, support, and prayers. God Bless.
