On October 4th, my husband Dwight injured himself while lifting his telescopes. Due to the severe pain, we went to urgent care where X-rays/CT Scans revealed multiple lesions (abnormalities) in his bones. He was then hospitalized to help manage his severe pain and complete additional lab tests, scans, and a bone marrow biopsy.
If you know my dear sweet man (DSM), Dwight, you know he’s a presence. At 6’4 you can’t miss him or his boisterous laugh. From his sense of humor to his love of movies, cooking gourmet meals, and his passion for astronomy and photography , he is a beloved member of our family and very dear to our friends.
Watching my husband suffer this pain and life altering diagnosis has been devastating. Even having been a nurse, nothing could have prepared me for hearing the doctor tell us that Dwight had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma - a type of cancer that affects his plasma cells.
We have consulted with doctors and specialists here in Albuquerque to determine the best path forward for Dwight. Like many cancers, Multiple Myeloma is not a curable disease, but through a combination of treatments, we can hope for remission and a good quality of life. The doctors have determined that due to the progression and type of cancer he will need a stem cell transplant when he reaches remission.

This diagnosis quickly changed our life. We are now preparing to put our house on the market and downsize to a single story home. This is necessary to accommodate Dwight's medical and daily needs.
The money we are hoping to raise will help cover:
- Medications (estimated $10-15k annually)
- Copays for treatment (our first copay was $1600)
- Stem cell transplant and recovery
- Our mortgage and expenses since Dwight will not be able to work while undergoing treatment

Update 10/26: After one round of radiation, Dwight started his first round of chemotherapy. He had a port placed today to make it easier to dispense his medications. He is tired but in good spirits.
