Bella's Memorial Project

Donation protected
On November 14, 2012, Isabella our angel was born. She was our entire world. She was happy, healthy and full of life, and so very loved! On the morning of June 28, 2014, Bella didn’t wake up. She was only 19 months old. What happened to Bella could happen to anyone. Bella had walking pneumonia and was septic even though she seemed perfectly fine. This tragedy shook our tiny community and affected everyone who knew her, and many others who didn’t. Our project began as a simple yet beautiful memorial for Bella, which would have been a park bench and a tree. It was hoped that a memorial for a beautiful little girl would help our community heal after this tragic loss. Bella's mother, Angie was approached by a member of our community to enhance this original idea. This was where the Splash Pad dream began and the Friends of Larder Committee was born.

The Friends of Larder is a fundraising committee under the Township of Larder Lake, which was formed for the purpose of building a Splash Pad in memory of Bella. The Township of Larder Lake has been working on securing funds for a new ice rink because the one we currently have is in disrepair. The Friends of Larder committee was approached by the Township of Larder Lake to see if we were interested in merging our projects. A combined project is practical and economical in our remote northern community as it will be utilized all year round as a dual-purpose facility. We became partners in August, 2015. The Township of Larder Lake will be matching all money raised by our committee dollar for dollar, including all donations.

Our goal is to build a Splash Pad/Ice Rink combination, which will be located on the old ice rink location. The Township offices are also located on this property as well as a baseball field and small basketball court. This is a small close-knit community with a population of less than 700. There are not many opportunities to improve the recreational activities in our area. A new ice rink during the winter and its transformation to a splash pad in the summer will enhance the recreational opportunities for all members of our community. It will provide a much-needed boost as the recreational hub.

The cost for this project is $367 000. We have secured $160 000 to date ($100 000 from FEDNOR, $30 000 raised by Friends of Larder, and $30 000 matched by the Township of Larder Lake). An application has also been submitted to the Ontario Trillium Foundation to secure additional funding (pending approval).

Any and all donations are gratefully appreciated. Please remember that any amount donated will be matched by the Township of Larder Lake. We are hoping that with your assistance, as well as our other partners, we shall heal our community by creating this beautiful memorial for Bella.
