Felix's Top Surgery

$5,923 of $7,000 goal

Hi there!
My name is Felix, and I am a nonbinary transmaculine person. This means that although I was assigned female at birth, I do not identify with that assigned gender.
Like many transgender people, I am undergoing hormone replacement therapy to change aspects of my physical appearance to align more with my gender identity. Although weekly intramuscular shots of testosterone are magical and life-affirming for me, I still experience significant dysphoria when it comes to my chest. This means that it causes me depression, anxiety, and feelings of disassociation. Luckily, I have been able to make the down payment (thanks to your help) and schedule top surgery for June 26th!

For the past year and a half, I have worn a chest binder as a temporary way to flatten my chest. Chest binders are very uncomfortable (sometimes painful), come with a list of potential health hazards (such as broken ribs, permanent scarring, pneumonia, etc.), cannot be worn while exercising, and can only be worn for 6-8 hours per day. Even using the best binders money can buy, I'm still not able to function in the world the way I need to.

Any amount of money you are able to give is helpful! If you aren't able to give money at this time, please let me know if there's something I can do in exchange (mow your lawn, give you a yoga lesson, pet-sit, house-sit, babysit, clean your house, etc.).
Regardless of whether you're able to donate money, I hope you will share my gofundme page and ask others to contribute if they are able.

As a transgender person living in the southern region of the United States, I constantly fear for my safety. My existence will only continue to become more unsafe the more "ambiguous" my gender appears. It is simply not safe for me to have facial hair and a deep voice at the same time as having noticeable chest. While this is *not* the primary or only reason why top surgery is necessary for me, it is a compelling one.

Having top surgery is necessary for my physical and mental health, will help me feel at home in my body, will allow me to fully participate in life, and will help ensure my safety.

Thank you!

Hey, folks! I want to give you all an update on surgery, fundraising, and medical expenses. For those of you who don't know, I had to have surgery in November to address a 13mm kidney stone (about the size of a large marble) in my right kidney. This kidney stone, along with other medical issues, ended up costing thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, I had to re-appropriate some of my top surgery funds to cover these medical expenses. However, paying for these necessary medical treatments and procedures helped me meet my health insurance deductible, which means insurance will cover about 60% of surgery (not including the surgeon's fee). And just as importantly, this has helped me be physically healthy enough for top surgery. To put this into simple terms, insurance is covering part of top surgery (not including the surgeon's fee of $3,500) and I have about $1,500 left to raise before June 26th.
I have been so humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity of people who have donated to and shared my fundraising campaign. I can't believe I'm finally on the home stretch. As I'm writing this, I only have to wait 65 more days until surgery. Thank you for helping make this necessary medical procedure happen!

Hey everyone,
I got some bad news from my surgeon's office that my health insurance won't cover any part of my surgery. This was very unexpected because when I was looking at the benefits of my plan before starting this process, it said it was covered. I'm going to try filing another claim, but I'm not feeling very optimistic.
I've increased my goal to cover almost the full amount. I'm saving as much money as possible, but since I was laid off last month, I'm stretched pretty thin. I've been doing yard work and odd jobs, painting decks, and babysitting to cover my bills. I'm still applying to as many nonprofit jobs as possible, but it seems to be a tough job market right now.
I have to be honest, I'm feeling pretty crushed by this news. 2018 has been a really awful year but I'm trying to keep my chin up and not give up. I'm so grateful for the incredible support and generosity people have shown me. I couldn't have gotten this far without your support, so thank you. I still have a ways to go before I reach my new goal, so *any* amount is very, very appreciated.
Thank you.
Love,
Felix

Hey, folks!
I wanted to update you all on how things are going and where I'm at in the process of getting top surgery.
I am so, so incredibly grateful for all the support you've shown me. It's been a difficult few months and I've run into some barriers and encountered providers who are more interested in gatekeeping than ensuring their clients get necessary treatment. On top of that, I was laid off from my job at the end of March. I've been spending 8+ hours a day looking and applying for jobs. Luckily, I was able to find a fantastic therapist who was willing and able to write me a letter of support. My primary care provider and nurse practitioner who manages my hormone replacement therapy have also been completely supportive throughout the entire process.
I had my surgery consultation with Dr. Keelee MacPhee in March, and was blown away by her professionalism, compassion, and willingness to answer my very long list of questions. Surgery is currently scheduled for May 24, but I'm not sure if I'll have to push it back to sometime in the middle of summer. The only reason I'd push it back is if I get a job before surgery, in which case my employer would probably not be okay with me missing 2-3 weeks of work pretty soon after I start.
I will keep you all updated with any new information related to my job search, surgery date, and details about surgery. You can also visit my blog to learn more about my journey as a transmasculine person at www.felix-files.com. Once again, I am SO grateful for all of your support and generosity. Thank you so much.
Love,
Felix

Hey, folks!
I'm having a hard time finding the words to describe how supported and loved I am feeling. I am overwhelmed by the generous donations that have been made so far, along with the kind messages I've received from people who have donated and who want to donate. You are giving me hope that this surgery will go from just a distant dream and a vague possibility to something that will really happen.
Thank you so much! I hope that people will continue to contribute whenever and whatever they can, as well as encouraging others to donate.
Love,
Felix
