Programs for fathers and children

Donation protected
Sole Fathers United is a 100% volunteer, not for profit organisation set up to provide a support, social and educational network for fathers and their children. With a primary focus on practical, positive and proactive parenting and giving families a hand up.

Please take a moment to watch the A Current Affair segment on Sole Fathers United Inc. Assoc.
to have a greater understanding of the services we have provided.

In 2011 I founded this organisation because in 2008 I found myself homeless with my two year old daughter and found out very quickly that there was no services specifically designed for fathers who have primary care for their children. Too many children were missing out on the supports they so desperately needed.

The money raised will go towards operational costs and the reinstatement of as many of our programs that are outlined below. In addition, we will seek the services of a professional grant writer for larger government and non-government grants.

Fathers Support Group
(Think Healthy)

The Fathers Support Group occurs on the first and third Sunday of each month. The program is segmented into formal and informal sessions.

Formal Sessions
These sessions have a formal structure to them. We invite guest speakers to attend and discuss topics specific to their profession or field of expertise. These include speakers discussing topics such as Family Nutritional Needs, Family Law, Motivational Speaking, Child Psychology, Positive Relationships, Maternal (paternal) and Child Services and First-Aid awareness session for children.

Informal Sessions
This is an opportunity for fathers and their children to engage in games and activities that promote positive relations. This in turn strengthens the faith that children have in their parent, increases both the child(ren) and fathers esteem needs and due to the nature of our program, fulfils a sense of belongingness that increases each member’s sense of self-worth.

Fathers Cooking Class
(Eat Healthy)

There are so many easy fast food options available in our time-poor society such as McDonald's, Pizza, KFC, Hungry Jacks, etc. Most fast food is nutrient-poor and eating it regularly can result in negative eating behaviours possibly leading to health complications. Our aim is to provide fathers with a fundamental knowledge of economical, tasty and nutritional seasonal recipes that the whole family will benefit from and the children will enjoy.

We have a maximum capacity of 10 Fathers in the kitchen during each class and we cater activities for approximately 20 children whilst the class is occurring. When the meals are ready we all sit together, enjoying the meal just prepared.

Active Fathers Active Children Engaging Together (A.F.A.C.E.T)
(Live Healthy)

A.F.A.C.E.T. was stage three of our Improving Families vision. This is a great opportunity for fathers and children to divert their attention from the Television, iPad and other electronic devices that constrain our will to get active.

With the support of the Mill Park Leisure YMCA & their qualified staff, we were able to provide exercise sessions such as boxing, cycling, indoor circuit, Sh’bam (dance Class), body combat, aerobics, playgroup sessions for 3-5yrs, indoor and outdoor games such as sash tiggy, relay races, handball, football and dodge ball. At the conclusion of the classes the pool was available for a swim and an evening BBQ dinner was provided.

Although the program is aimed at the abilities of the children, fathers who had attended later mentioned the activities had resulted in them feeling the muscles that they had long forgotten existed.

Fathers and Children Welfare Service

The aim of the Fathers and Children Welfare Service is to ensure that the safety, biological needs, physiological and psychological needs of fathers and children are met, helping them transition smoothly from one chapter of their lives to the next as a single parent family. This is achieved though ‘phone’ and/or ‘in person’ contact and support and referals. We also receive non-perishable goods from local businesses and clothing and toys from the community to distribute to those in need.

Family Functions

Throughout the year, Sole Fathers United hosts family functions such as Easter, Father’s Day and Christmas. These are times of the year where many single fathers may feel embarrassed or even ashamed due to their inability to meet the expectations of their children during such highly publicised periods. We endevour to assure that no child misses out due to their circumstances and enjoys the magic of each function.

The functions are fully catered and include Easter egg hunts, Father’s Day gifts, Father Christmas and presents. Fathers are also encouraged to invite their parents helping to create a more family focused environment, where the children will feel as safe and secure as possible.

Fathers and Children - Relationship Strengthening Camp

Family camps with workshops and activities are an opportunity to create a supportive environment for families to build upon and practice what they learn. Family camps have been found to be useful in developing positive and healthy relationships.

This camp is a way for fathers and children to strengthen their relationships and create more meaningful bonds with one another. Family camps can be highly motivating and empowering experiences for single parent families and can act as a tremendous catalyst toward change within a family.

Introduction to cooking for children

This will be an opportunity for children aged from 12 to 17 years to learn life skills in an age appropriate setting. From growing fresh produce to cooking basic nutritional meals improving on their self-esteem and eating habits throughout life.

Domestic Violence Services

This will be a service specifically catered to support fathers and their children who find themselves to be victims of domestic violence to find the stability, safety and security they need to move on with their lives after such a traumatic experience.

Too many children miss out on so much due to the financial restraints and social isolation of single parenting. Our aim is to assure that our children will look back as adults at their childhood with cherished memories and the life skills required to succeed as an adult.

Our children are our future and every child deserves the best start possible.

Thank you for your time and support.

Edit;
If we can double (reach $20,000) the amount we seek to get through this campaign I pledge to start up Sole Mothers United to compliement Sole Fathers United, with all the programs outlined above to be impliemented for single mother families. For the Easter, Christmas and Childrens cooking classes, both sole fathers, sole mothers and their children will unite as one community function.

If we can reach $25,000 I pledge to start an unbrella organisation that will filter funding on a needs basis to both Sole Fathers United and Sole Mothers United and will provide services to all families in Australia that are in need or require support services, so equality of oppertunity is available to all children.
