Farm Fresh Catering has partnered with High Desert Montessori School and created a ground breaking Organic School Lunch Program. Meals are made from scratch each day utilizing food that is grown on site in the school gardens, involving students with authentic work experience in food service, and composting all of the food waste that would normally be headed to the landfill.
In developing relationships with local farmers, the Great Basin Food Co-op, and distributors like Earl’s Organic Produce & Veritable Vegetable out of the Bay area, they are able to provide healthy school lunches with over 90% of the ingredients being certified organic and Non-GMO. Children enjoy some of their traditional favorites like Macaroni & Cheese, Pizza, and Tacos, while setting a new standard for what school lunches look like with items like stuffed avocados, baked mahi-mahi, and hot panini sandwiches that are offered daily. There are gluten free, vegetarian, and paleo options available for families with specific dietary restrictions, and every main dish is made fresh each morning in the school’s on-site kitchen.
High Desert Montessori School is a K-9th grade tuition free public charter school that was built in a lower income neighborhood with the intention of making Montessori education accessible to Reno’s less affluent families. Now with a similar intention they have set the goal of making these Organic School Lunches accessible to families in need and have launched a fundraising campaign where local businesses and residents have the opportunity to sponsor children to receive these amazing organic lunches at a 50% reduced rate, making it affordable for the families that need it most.
