Family Member Shot

On September 30, 2017 we let our precious Siberian Husky, Kaya,  out back to go to the bathroom and run a bit before bedtime. At around 1:30  A.M. my son got home from work to find our dog missing from our back yard. We immediatly panicked. We all threw our shoes and ran outside to call for her. As we were getting ready to leave my son ran around the side of the house to see if she was there. To his surprise Kaya was laying in the grass, he called for her but she would not come. My son proceeded to walk over to her and cried out, "Mom, something is wrong she won't stand up".  Everytime we tried to move her, she would scream out in pain. Finally I asked, "Is there blood" to which he held up his hand, covered in blood. Panicking I ran in to get a blanket and we put her on it to move her to the house. When we got her in her shoulder had a wound that was squirting blood and we immediately worked frantically to get the bleeding stopped. I just knew Kaya had been hit by a car.

We rushed Kaya into the vet and the vet said from the way it looked her leg was broke but they would have to do further testing.  They speculated she was hit by a car. We waited anxiously for the results of her scans. After a long wait the vet came out with the news, our sweet Kaya had been shot. Shot? I live in a very tight knit community, so loving and caring. I live in the city, how can this be? Did she do something wrong? Did she get into trouble? Did she hurt someone? The news was not good. Kaya was going to need a surgery to fix her broken bones and get the bullet  removed.  After figuring out a plan of action for her and getting her medicated and some of her pain gone we discussed the legal side of it. My vet strongly suggested we file a police report and get the ball rolling legally. The vet allowed us to bring Kaya home till her surgery which will be Thursday, October 5, 2017. In the meantime I remembered finding some blood on the sidewalk when I walked back outside to load her up and decided to follow the trail when I got home.

When we arrived home from the vet we immediately started following Kaya's blood trail and it lead us a block down to our neighbors house. We immediately thought the worst, our neighbor had shot Kaya. We called the police. The police came out and worked for 3 hours or more putting pieces together, talking to neighbors and following Kaya's blood trail some more. After 5 cops investigated and met Kaya and saw her demeanor and personality they could see that she wasn't a viscious animal.  There were no reports of dogs attacking animals or people, the officer said that whoever did this to Kaya was being malicious. Responsible pet owners call things like this in, the reality is whoever did this to Kaya didn't call because they were doing this out of malice and intent to hurt her.  They even suggested the way the bullet went in Kaya might not have been able to fight back or run. Kaya is very submissive and sweet and this is so heartbreaking, to even think anyone would tower over her and shoot her. The police are working hard at finding whoever did this to my girl and even posting something to their Facebook page reaching out for any information, we have some of the most amazing police on her case, true animal lovers. The police officer also said that he has never seen a case like this before. It was also suggested that it could be either a 22 bullet or a pellet bullet from an airsoft gun which would help determine more whether we are dealing with teenagers or an adult and what kind of weapon to look for but they seemed to believe it was more than likely, teenagers. I have also offered a $1000 dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot my sweet girl.

The cop followed the blood footprints and took pictures and showed me how far my baby drug herself home, he said she was incredible and even to make it a block like this showed how much love she knows we have for her, she just wanted to make it home. I can't even imagine the fear she must have had stopping and resting in someone's yard so close to home, just trying to get to us. The vet said she's lucky to be alive. Kaya has a long road ahead of her but she needs this surgery done and will haev to have physical therapy. I have had many many friends request that I set up this page because they want to help. Anything is appreciated as I would have never thought I would be dealing with something like this in life. A shot pet that is going to need surgery and PT to recover from a bullet put into her body out of malice. I don't live in the country, I live in the city and it is scary because someone was comfortable shooting my dog in city limits. I am scared to even let my dogs out anymore.

These are things you read about as a pet owner and cringe. It's heartbreaking and devastating. I have been reading so many stories about Huskies getting shot and poisoned lately for no reason, it just doesn't make sense. You can't be to careful!  I don't know what would possess someone to shoot a beautiful and harmless animal but it happened to me. This is a harsh and cruel reality that has hit me overnight. Kaya is like my child, she is like my children's sister, she is family. When saving money for your future and your pets future you don't exactly plan something like this.  Any little bit helps. Thank you.
