Miles for HoPE

Tax deductible
Kinsley Ann Markle was born on September 2nd, 2012.  From the moment she entered the world until her passing on January 18th, 2017 Kinsley was a blessing to those that knew her. She had a smile that filled people with joy and eyes that lit up when she laughed. We all loved Kinsley very much and will miss having her with us.

Kinsley was born with a congenital brain disorder called holoprosencephaly (HPE) that affects between 1 in 5000 and 1 in 10000 live births.  Less than 5% of fetuses with HPE survive delivery and most infants born with the condition do not survive past six months. Kinsley's life was a miracle in every sense of the word and each birthday she celebrated was a testament to the strength of her spirit.

There is no cure for HPE and treatment varies from one case to the next. Taking care of a child with HPE requires a great deal of support, both emotional and financial, that many families need help finding or cannot afford. Families for HoPE is a nonprofit organization that was formed to provide support to families dealing with HPE. This is done through networking and education (in the form of conferences). Every other year Families for HoPE organizes a conference in Dallas, TX for HPE families to learn about recent advances in HPE treatment and meet other families raising children with the same condition.  For families that cannot afford the registration fee and 4 nights hotel stay Families for HoPE offers assistance to cover the costs. Additional information can be found at familiesforhope.org.

One of the best ways to honor Kinsley's life, in my opinion, is to help other families with HPE find the support they need. To do that I've decided to run to Dallas! Not all at once of course, but from now until January 18th, 2018 I will be running... A LOT! The distance from Portage, MI to Dallas, TX is approximately 1080 miles. I intend to cover that distance with my legs (~21 miles per week). Whatever money we raise will be donated to Families for HoPE.
