Matt needs our help!!!

A parents worse nightmare came true for dear friends of our family. On Tuesday evening January 23rd the call came in from NP police to the Kreft/Combs family. Matthew, their oldest son was in a traumatic motorcycle accident and being air flighted to the nearest trauma center. That night Matt endured his first of multiple brain surgeries. By Friday January 26 his stats had not improved, his brain swelling was astronomical, the pressure was in the 30’s. Matt’s family had been given the worst news to date, its time to consider letting Matt go to the lord peacefully. The hospital stated there was nothing more to be done all the Medicines have been given and the surgeries performed. The ICU would not even let his own mother to see him bc his brain pressure was so high and any stimulation such as soft spoken words, or the gentle stroke of his mother’s touch would agitate him so badly that his brain pressure would rise.

I can not even fathom being told my vibrant, beautiful, loving, silly, smart baby boy should be taken off life support. Those trauma doctors said exactly that to my friend Madeline. For those of you that know Matt, know that he is a mamas boy he loves abs respects her beyond measure, his baby sisters are the light of his life, his younger brother his best friend, not to mention his dad is a strong man he looks up too, and his grandma and grandpa are just like having anther Mom and Dad to him. For me to tell you his family is his everything is an understatement. We as a large group of 20 something people sat in that ICU waiting room rallied around Madeline, diligently praying to God for a miracle. Matthews miracle came the next morning, Saturday January 27th when a different set of dr’s ans nurses were on staff. Once again he was in the dangerously high brain pressures and now developed a fever that would not break the nurse called over this dr , who was their to see one of his own trauma patients. The nurse pulled him to Matt’s bedside where he said pull all the records on this boy and get them ready for me as soon as I see my patient. Dr. Miracle called madeline back and told her his son was that same age and in no way would he give up yet!!! Mind you, this is only 4 days after the accident. Dr. Miracle told her I’m going to fix your baby boy, and back to surgery, Matt went. This was the miracle we prayed for. It was a success, Matt’s Brain Pressure came down and he was becoming less agitated and making great strides of improvement. The brain swelling receded to back with in the portion of the skull he had, (most of which had been removed during the two surgeries) dr. Miracle was very confident in his procedure. Matt was being watched around the clock by his mother, Grandma, Auntie, and high school sweet heart and love of his life, as well as those of us coming up to visit. Matt’s progress was getting better he was opening his eyes, pulling at his tubes and showing signs of brain activity. Unfortunately this did not last, matt took a dramatic turn for the worse, dr. Miracle is just that, a heaven sent miracle which we never saw again and Matt’s original doctor said his eeg, and brain activity was not there, that what he was doing is called posturing a neurological term for sporadic involuntary body movements. Matt, had an amazing weekend where we saw a recovery happening and were expecting our beloved boy to be coming back to us. The hospital weaned him off the sedation and he was supposedly all awake on his own, now taking breaths on his own all while hooked up to vent. Matt was doing well. He had a major set back literally overnight. Madeline was told he had a stroke in the hours after she left him Sunday night feb 4. Matt is now considered 80% brain dead. The nurses in the ICU are telling his mom, Madeline, they are now being selfish and it is time to move Matt to hospice and let him go. As a mother myself,  I come to you and ask you, can you do that with your baby? What makes this even harder is that when you see him and he opens his and moves them in the direction your voice is, it makes you question what they are saying. Matt is still in there with us and it is not just his family that Sees this. Matt has been moved to an ICU step down accute care hospital, having been there near a month now the insurance company is making the family move him again to either a nursing home or a hospice.

Madeline is fighting tooth and nail against the insurance company to send him to the world renown Brooks Rehabilitation center in Jacksonville Florida. Enough of his therapist have seen brain activity in Mathew that they have called for a therapist to come down and evaluate Matt. MATT WAS APPROVED as a patient for Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital, but his insurance denied him. The cost to help Matt is $1000.00 a day out of pocket. I come to you, our amazing community to find it in your hearts to help this amazing family, Matt, and all the people who love him. Help us get Matt to Brooks and the help he needs to get better.
