Old Sound Room is a performance ensemble that builds new work. Our stories spark thought and inspire action. We honor the past in order to reach the present. We strive to remind our audiences that they are not alone, and to celebrate our shared existence with courageous abandon.
However, right now OSR is struggling. More than that, the pandemic has crippled our organization. We are a small company based in NYC, and alongside theaters of all sizes we had to cancel an entire year of work. This included cancelling our monthly events (SOUNDSTAGE and NEW SOUNDS), as well as the exciting repertory of new work we had scheduled for the fall of 2020. These cancellations destroyed our revenue plan and the primary mechanism for our fundraising. On top of this, preproduction had already been underwritten through our line of credit, which now leaves us in debt and without our usual sources of revenue.
We have been managing despite everything, but now the situation has become urgent. If this was simply about the company continuing to exist, we wouldn't be reaching out like this, but the company debt was secured personally by one of our founding members. We are now looking at the company being forced to default on the debt from our undone 2020 season, and that weight is falling on one of our company members as an individual. This will wreak havoc on their credit and finances.
We can't let that happen. We care about OSR, the work we have done, and the work that we hope to do in the future — but more, we care about our organization's ability to shelter its most vital members in a moment when they are at their most vulnerable.
So we are asking for your help. We are raising money to help alleviate this outstanding and unexpected financial crisis. Please help us get through this moment, a moment the company could not have foreseen.
