On June 20, 2017, an unimaginable thing happened to one of the nicest, compassionate, exuberant, passionate, and full of life person I am proud to know. My boss and friend, Julie McCann suffered a brain aneurysm, a stroke, and broken heart syndrome.
As many of you know Julie traveled a lot for her job and this particular week she was in our office in Connecticut for her monthly visit (she works in our North Carolina office). I saw her for only half a day and there was no sign that something like this could happen. We walked out of the office together and said our “see you tomorrow’s.” The next morning I found out the awful news from my co-worker. Luckily, for all of us & especially Julie, she wasn’t travelling alone. Julie and my co-worker Andrew had plans for dinner on this night, thank God. And when she wouldn’t respond to his texts or phone calls, he knew something was wrong, and had hotel staff check her room. In my opinion, and everyone else who knows what happened, he is a hero. He saved her life by acting.
Long story short, Julie was in the ICU for 30 days before being released to a rehab facility. Her journey at first was very up and down. Even typing this I’m getting emotional thinking about it. But if you know Julie, and I know that you do, she is a fighter. She never backs down from anything and I just knew she would never give up. In the past couple of weeks she has made great progress and I know it will continue.
During her time in the ICU, Julie’s husband Pete, and other members of her immediate family were flying back and forth between Connecticut and their homes in South Carolina & Ohio. It just happened that Pete started a new job in the months before the incident happened and they also have a dog named Bo who is lonely without his Mom. Both Julie and Pete have some family in CT, and we are incredibly grateful that she was not alone, while Pete was travelling back to SC. But I truly can’t imagine how hard it must have been for him to leave her.
Those of us close to Julie in the Finance Department and throughout the AmTrust community wanted a way to help out both Julie and Pete as we can only imagine how astronomical the medical and travel expenses will end up being when Julie has recovered. This is why we are reaching out to those people that Julie has touched and worked with throughout the years for help. Julie still has a long road ahead and we really want to give back and hope others do too. I ask that anyone that wants to donate please give what you can. And also forward this on to anyone you know who knows Julie and would want to help.
We remain very optimistic that Julie will come out of this the same amazing woman she was before (just hopefully with less stress!!!). The recovery will not be easy but we all know that Julie has amazing drive and perseverance. That along with your love, prayers, and generosity will make sure she conquers the next steps in her recovery.
