East Glacier 8th grade trip

My name is Jessica Schauf and I am a teacher at East Glacier Park Grade School in East Glacier, Montana. We are on the Blackfeet Reservation in Northern Montana. We have only about 70 students in our school that serves grades K-8.

In this community, school is not always a priority when there are critical survival issues dealt with on a regular basis at home. To celebrate our students’ accomplishment of completing grade school, every year the 8th grade class fundraises to go on a trip. This year, our 8th grade class is unusually large with 10 children. They have chosen to try raising money for a trip to Alaska to experience things they haven't before. Many of my students have never seen the ocean, been on a boat, or even been out of the state of Montana. 
As their teacher, I want them to experience parts of the world outside of our small community. My students are working hard to raise funds for what will be for many, the trip of a lifetime. It is sometimes difficult to get community support in their fundraising endeavors when there is so little money to spare.
