“My goal for bringing you The Importance of Being Earnest is to, of course, make people laugh and entertain you all. But what initially drew me to the play were the intimate experiences I had when it was used in Scene Study at the British American Drama Academy. I honestly never knew this existed though I had always been very pro-Oscar Wilde since high school. I could see a little of myself in each of these characters and I’m sure you will too. It’s packed with sophisticated wit and satire that exposes human vice.

I want you to ask yourself questions about the nature of your own identity and the root of your beliefs. I want to challenge you to reflect upon the current conventions you may be practicing or upholding, harmful or not. Perhaps think to yourself, in what ways do we feel our society has limited itself? How can we bring ourselves closer to a truth that is not defined by everything and everyone else around us?

This play explores the idea of performance even within the characters’ lives. Have you ever felt the need to put on a false self? Can you recall a time when you felt astray? What did that character accomplish for you?
