Charlie’s Medical Bills

Donation protected

On Friday, August 13 an unknown person broke into The Artemis Project’s rescue facility and belligerently began trying to release animals from their kennels. The woman then became violent after being asked to leave by Charlie, the rescue head kennel technician. The woman shot Charlie in the shoulder at point blank range with a shotgun and fled the premises. Due to the distance from the nearest hospital, Charlie using a leash as a tourniquet was the only thing that saved his life until the ambulance arrived. He was quickly air lifted to Little Rock and is undergoing emergency surgery. This is a huge blow to his family and rescue, as he is such a crucial member of our rescue family. Please donate if you can.

Update as of 8/14:

Charlie was taken into surgery at 5:40 am this morning to further clean and dress his wound, removed all the bone fragments, and placed a temporary prosthetic shoulder to hold the space. They are discussing his options. At this point, they are hoping he is a candidate for shoulder replacement but aren’t sure if he has enough muscle mass left to support that. However, he is stable and we are grateful that he is alive.

Update as of 8/16:

We had to push back Charlie’s scheduled surgery due to low hemoglobin levels and a high fever. He was given a blood transfusion before undergoing his second surgery to cut out necrotic muscle and tissue. He is scheduled for a complete shoulder replacement early next week if everything goes according to plan and if there is no infection which is prevalent in gunshot wounds. We are hoping he can keep his arm. His shooter was released from jail on bond at 2pm today. No news on her motive for breaking into our rescue facility or actions. We are hoping we will learn more after her arraignment hearing Wednesday. Thank you to everyone for your support and donations. Charlie and our family appreciate it more than we can put into words.

Update as of 8/21:

Charlie was discharged on Tuesday 8/17 so he can recover and heal in the comfort of home. He is still scheduled to go back to the doctor early next week to recheck his wound to make sure there is no infection. His prosthetic surgery is tentatively scheduled for 3 weeks out. There is still no new news on the shooters motive for breaking into our rescue facility or her actions. Although we were hoping we would learn more after her arraignment hearing last Wednesday, it unfortunately and unfairly got waived. We greatly appreciate the continued prayers for Charlie and family.
