Fund YEK PEYNA GUXGATAN & Language Revitalization

Angel Rose Artist Collective and T.E.L.A.S. Colectivo Teatral collaborate to produce YEK PEYNA GUXGATAN!, a play for young audiences with music and puppets, about El Salvador history, Nawat language revitalization, and Native American pride.

Nawat is a critically endangered language from Western El Salvador, with less than 100 first language speakers. DC-area language revitalization efforts since the 1990s have created a small community of second-language speakers, and our collective has been working with and honoring the language in the work of the Angel Rose Artist Collective. This play, YEK PEYNA GUXGATAN, is a culmination of those efforts, geared towards young children - the next generation of community leaders - and addresses the need to bring a community to a language that is very often oppressed.

Most of the time, people don't even understand why this is a cause that needs to be supported. We can direct them to information from the United Nations regarding critically endangered languages, or research that states a connection between heritage language proficiency, ethnic identity, and mental health. We can show them visual examples of the impact of the language revitalization. Many resources exist that explain why language revitalization is a critical form of political education!
