Year-Long Mindfulness Certification

Once upon a time...

It started just like that.

My first ever job was caring for 4 children when I was 15 years old. Did I know that "childcare" would turn into a lifelong career? Fast-forward 25 years and here I am: still insanely passionate about teaching, working with, and learning from children and adolescents. I've only had a glimpse of the magical effects of mindfulness and yoga and the seeds it plants in our youth and now being accepted to the Mindful Schools Year-long Certification Program, my heart has been brilliantly blown open.

Right now I teach children and teen yoga classes, facilitate Teacher Trainings for individuals who want to delve into wellness practices, AND, I teach yoga/wellness to private clients ages 5-95 years old (...Well, I actually don’t have any 95-year-olds, yet, but I imagine my mom falling into that category in about 25 years).

This certification will consciously and artfully sew together my passion to bring wellness and yoga to my school community, friends, family, caregivers, and professionals in all fields. The program will deepen my personal practice, help me to become a more skillful and embodied facilitator, and transform my work with youth and students of all ages.

Your gift will provide positive inspiration for moving forward in wellness.  You will help transform our culture from the inside-out and offer a life-enhancing practice to communities through an embodied, caring, and heart-full pathway. Infinite gratitude.

[Details: The interactive 10-month program begins in September 2017 and closes with a week-long residential retreat in Garrison, NY July 2018.]

Finally, my intentions with this certification within the school community is outlined below:

- Incorporate movement & mindfulness into specific time of the day (morning meetings, read-alouds, test prep, etc.);
- Regularly scheduled time slots to provide movement and mindfulness or can be utilized on an as-needed basis depending on the grade level;
- Lead professional development for teachers on how to incorporate movement & mindfulness into the classroom;
- Lead before school yoga classes for either students & families or staff members ;
- Lead movement & mindfulness for staff in need of self-care

As a self-proclaimed armchair neuroscientist and for those of us who like research, I've included a couple of "brain-y" excerpts below:

“If students can learn to be ‘fully-present,’ they can increase the quality of their learning performance by being more focused, and become better able to deal with stressful situations (Langer, 1993). When a student is mindful, he or she becomes able to approach learning situations from a novel perspective while drawing upon previously learned material” (Langer, Hatem, Joss, & Howell, 1989).

“Current scientific findings are clear that in order to regulate emotions (one of the most critical right-hemisphere functions), human beings are dependent on mature brains to initially assist in the micro-regulation of their physical and emotional world. Ideally, this interactive regulation transitions back and forth over the childhood and adolescence until the person is largely self- regulation. However, at stressful times, it is necessary and appropriate to seek interactive regulation from stable others.” - Arlene Montgomery, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin
