On February 18th, 2017 it was just a normal day, having a family gathering at the house. Later that evening my dad called and said he was taking my mom to the hospital. She had been having "pneumonia" and trouble breathing causing 4 previous hospitalizations in the past year. One being just three weeks prior. I got to the hospital right after they had checked in - which my mom walked herself into the E.R. At that time, we thought she'd simply get treated for pneumonia and be home in a week. A few days later, our whole world changed. Little did anyone expect what she has had to endure these last 5 months. Lung biopsy, hundreds of blood tests, collapsed lung, chest tubes, countless X-rays, several weeks of deep sedation, intubation, being placed on ECMO, tracheostomy, ventilator, dozens of blood transfusions, being revived, learning how to move her limbs again, still learning how to stand on her own and so on and so on.......Oh yeah - there was that rainy foggy day back in March when she was transferred from York Hospital to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. After all this time and all those tests, treatments and consultations, the best doctors and nurses in the world still aren't exactly sure what her sickness is or what caused it. As I sit here with her and reminisce about this latest detour in our crazy, unpredictable journey together, I can still see her smile as she is still hanging strong - still fighting - still determined to beat whatever this thing is. We are all still fighting with you! #KIMSTRONG

UPDATE: As of September 23rd, 2017 - NO MORE ECMO! After 7 months/211 days on Ecmo, Kim was able to get decanulated. We still have a long road ahead of us and getting her weaned off of the ventilator is the next step. We are hoping to have much more physical therapy with her soon. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
