Unlock Education in 2018

Hi Everyone!

On January 9th, 2018, a new school semester will begin in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Students will start to try on their uniforms,  purchase new notebooks and sharpen their pencils to prepare for the academic year.  
However, due to economic and social barriers, not all youth in developing regions are lucky enough to walk into classroom doors each morning. 

 This is why we have set a goal to raise $1600 this holiday season, to provide 5  young women in Victoria Falls with the financial support to attend school in 2018.  With your help, we can provide them the opportunity to grow as individuals, expand their knowledge and explore their passions. Here are their stories: 

Amanda Kasongo,
10 years old and in 6th grade, Amanda lives with her single mother and two sisters in a rural area outside of Vicoria Falls. Amanda loves spending time at school and excels in all of her classes. She has an admirable goal to be a doctor when she is older.


Lebokgang Nyasulu
Lebokgang is 12 years old and lives in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe with her single mother who is taking care of her and her two siblings. Each day she displays  an unparalleled motivation to learn and aspires to be a Judge when she grows up.

Sbusisiwe Nkomo
Sbusisiwe is 13 years old in 7th grade. Currently separated from her parents, she lives with her Grandmother. Sbusisiwe enjoys meeting new people and has a charismatic and outgoing personality, which is well suited for her goal to be an Airline Hostess when she grows up. 


Lubelihle Ncube Mkhosana
15 years old, Lubelihle is currently not attending  school but spends her spare time reading and is eager to learn. Lubelihle's passion is to help others live a strong and healthy life, so she wishes to be a nurse when she grows up.

Andile Mathe
Andile, is 12 years old in 7th grade. She is an exceptionally intelligent young student who excels in all of her classes.  Andile lives with her single mother who is responsible for taking care of Andile and her two siblings. She wants to be a lawyer when she grows up.


So, why does all this matter?

When it comes to attending school, it is common for boys to receive preferential treatment over girls in developing countries such Zimbabwe. The longer that young girls spend away from school, the more disconnected and vulnerable they become. By keeping young girls in school, they become much less succeptible to prostitution, drugs, child pregnancy and abuse. 

Young and Gifted African's (YAGA) was founded by my friend Smokey Dube. He is a community leader for the Global Sojourns Giving Circle and a volunteer at the Rose of Charity Orphanage in Victoria Falls. YAGA is providing access to education and empowerment for young women in Africa. This organization goes the extra mile, to provide empowerment activities for students outside of school such as dance, art, film and music sessions, which fosters a community of optimism and support.

Where exactly will your donations be going?

All donations will be used to cover students' school fees, textbooks and supplies for the 2018 academic year, which may vary by each student depending on their age, school, and personal financial status.

This campaign will only run until December 31st, 2017, but we are optimistic of the positive impact that our community will bring in a short period of time.
